Gaza – Ma’an – The Hamas movement organized and celebrated the mass wedding of 450 couples in northern Gaza on Thursday, as well as 100 more in Gaza City.
Hamas media officer Iyad Al-Buzum said the Islamic movement would deliver an unspecified amount of money for each couple, in addition to gifts for both the groom and bride of each.
Al-Buzum added that the donations were "to confront the difficult circumstances due to the siege imposed on Gaza." He said that the celebration began in Al-Fakhura yard, where a number of Palestinians were killed in the latest Israeli assault.
"This is a message to the [Israeli] occupation, that the Palestinians are able to continue life, and are holding on to the option of resistance," Al-Buzum insisted.
He added that the celebration would continue on a stage that was installed in the city of Sheikh Zayed, and concluded by noting that de facto Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh would deliver a speech there.
The Hamas movement organized a mass wedding in the At-Tuffah neighborhood of Gaza City earlier this month. Amongst the grooms was Muhammad Al-Ay, a Hamas affiliate who served 17 years in Israel's custody.
Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum attended the event, which included 13 couples, along with several other Hamas officials. He highlighted that a mass wedding for blind couples would be organized later in July, which would be the first of its kind in the Middle East.
