Bethlehem - Ma'an - UNRWA called it a record-breaking day Thursday as 6,000 of Gaza's children from 119 schools brought their homemade kites out to the Beit Lahiya beach and set them aloft in the wind.

Observers counted at least 3,000 kites, shattering the previous record of 710, registered in Germany.

The day was organized by UNRWA summer camps, which operate throughout the Gaza Strip and host 240,000 children each summer. Each camp was allotted space on the long beach, and volunteers from the International Committee of the Red Cross supervised and registered the name of each child participating.

According to Al-Jazeera, Guinness Book staff were invited to verify the record-breaking attempt, but the organization cited a UK government warning against travel to the Strip and declined the invitation, sending detailed guidelines to organizers instead.

Guidelines stated that all kites counted in the record had to remain aloft simultaneously for at least 30 seconds.

It is so fantastic to see thousands of kids wearing colourful T-Shirts and caps flying colourful kits. I was present and witnessed the event from A to Z.

Thanks to those organizing the event and for sure, the kids themselves who were the stars. Gaza people deserves it.

I love to see children who are happy. I am glad to be able to see these pictures! Israel can destroy Palestinian buildings, but can never destroy the power of the Palestinian people to survive. They are really great!

If I was a news editor in an Israeli news channel I would put this has the headline article. Through mainstream media we never get to see the everyday life of Palestinians who just like the majority of Israelis just want to live peacefully, have descent jobs and good education for their kids.

What a beautiful, compelling site. Bravo to UNRWA for giving the children of Palestine hope and happiness. The Palestinian people must continue to draw hope and strength from their children - for them, remain resilient to achieve you legitimate national aspirations for freedom.

Awesome! What a terrific event. And in a place where there is so much misery, I hope it was truly a happy occasion for all who took part. Incredible to see all the beautiful kites that have been made. Such a creative spirit can never be suppressed. May all the children of Gaza live wild and free!

It is great to see Palestinian kids in Gaza having some fun for a change. Every single kid should be taught about the history of Palestine and what the zionists did in 1948. The kids should go to school & college as much as possible.

Education is definitely the biggest weapon on the battlefield.
