Female operatives of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) training in the Rafah district of the Gaza Strip. Since its formation in 1969 the DFLP has played an active role as a constituent member organization of the Palestine Liberation Organization. The Front's ideological focal point is Marxist, as its founders were particularly inspired by the grassroots revolutionary thought of Mao Zedong.

The DFLP held its 5th national congress from February to August 2007, where the Central Committee reelected its founder, Nayef Hawatmeh, as general secretary.

One of the last high-profile attacks made by DFLP fighters was in 2001 at a military base near the Israeli settlement of Neve Dekalim in southern Gaza, the largest such settlement in the occupied coastal strip. The base and settlement were subsequently evacuated as part of Israel's disengagement from Gaza in 2005.

This military exercise took place on 20 August 2009. Photographs by Hatem Omar.
