Ramallah – Ma’an – Na’im Abu Al-Hummus was sworn in as the secretary general of the cabinet in the Ramallah-based government on Tuesday, after a cabinet shuffle resulting from a politicized resignation.
Abu Al-Hummus replaces Hassan Abu Libda, who was appointed minister of national economy, who in turn replaced Bassem Khoury, who resigned citing the government’s handling of the UN-mandated Goldstone report that accuses Israel of war crimes in Gaza.
Abu Libda welcomed his successor wishing him good luck in his new position, Abu Libda applauding Al-Hummus for his accomplishments even before the establishment of the Palestinian Authority following the Oslo Accords.
Abu Al-Hummus recieved his PhD in education from the University San Francisco in 1985, and later chaired the departments of education and psychology at An-Najah National University in Nablus. He was once secretary-general of the Palestinian council for higher education. After the PA was established, he was undersecretary of the Ministry of Education until 2002. Then he was appointed minister of education and remained in the position for four years.
The new secretary-general is member of the Palestinian National Council, and member of the Palestinian Central Elections Commission.
