Ramallah – Ma'an – Senior PLO official Hanan Ashrawi, spoke of the “serious slowdown” in the US position on the Israel-Palestine conflict in a number of recent interviews, stating that the US has succumbed to Israeli pressure regarding settlements, and the future of Jerusalem.

Ashrawi noted that this change in attitude towards Israel constitutes a reversal of the promises made by US President Barack Obama who initially stressed the importance of a settlement freeze as necessary to reopen the peace process.

Ashrawi’s comments come after US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Saturday expressed support the view that a freeze on Israeli settlement construction in the West Bank should not be a precondition for renewed negotiations.

A member of the PLO’s executive committee, Ashrawi was one of the main early proponents of the two-state solution to the Palestinian struggle for self-determination.

Ashrawi further stated that the US now deals with Israel as "a state above the legitimacy of international laws.” She went on to state that by continually standing by Israel’s side, the US is effectively placing further hurdles to overcome in bringing about a viable peace.

In addition, she stressed the importance of Palestinian unity and the need for a strong position by the leaders of the Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority regarding negotiations.

Dr Ashrawi further called upon Arab states to intervene, to acknowledge their responsibility to the Palestinian question and to defend the rights of Palestinians.

Maybe it's time to up the anti, in light of the lack of political will in the USA and Israel to achieve a two state solution, the PA should now demand citizenship, and equal rights this will get them off the dime.

As usual, Hannan Ashrawi is right in every aspect. Maybe the U.S administration should recruit her to fight the U.S Zionist lobby groups because it's obvious the American leadership is incapable of doing this on its own.

Dear Dr Ashrawi,

The Arab States are not going to intervene, because they quite frankly are fed up with the Palestinians. You kill each other all the time, and argue like spoilt children.

You were misled by Arafat who was just out for power and money.

The only hopefor peace is make peace.

Joseph Sayegh, if they make peace, Israel uses the opportunity to steal more land. Israel loves peace because it can use it to grab up all of the West Bank and East Jerusalem, before it goes after Gaza.

It is time for all of you to understand & try to comprehend. The USA is protecting its nuclear base in Israel, using Israeli mercenaries to fight its endless wars under the promise of peace. As long as America continue to aspire for an empire they'll keep Palestininas & Jews fighting till doomsday!

#6 Haifa--I have to TOTALLY disagree with you when it comes to America keeping Palestinians & Jews fighting. Based on history, it's the Israelis (Jews) who took AND take the initiative to start & KEEP the conflict going. Zionists never want Muslims & Christians to unite...our fighting benefits THEM.

I agree that the current backtracking is disappointing/shameful. BUT, in this case, the problem is SOME Democrats (Obama needs them to pass certain legislation in the US)...NOT Obama! They support Israel. Still, Palestinians MUST be prepared to work with him...if opportunities present themselves.

ELEPHANT in the room is the ILLEGAL OCCUPATION. While US politicians accept bribes from aipac's 200 foreign agent lobbies nothing changes. Let them know we've caught on. Vote them ALL out. No more wars for Israel. Bring our guys home! Give ASHRAWI citizenship, elect her for president!
