Ramallah – Ma'an – Marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, Palestinian demonstrators breached Israel's concrete barrier near the West Bank city of Ramallah on Monday.

Reporting from the scene, Ma'an's correspondent said protesters, once they reached the other side, set fire to tires. Israeli forces also opened fire, the reporter said.

Around 100 demonstrators waving Palestinian flags and wearing fluorescent jackets reading, "We are going to Jerusalem," broke through near the Qalandiya military checkpoint, onlookers reported. A truck was used to pull down the concrete slabs making up the wall, according to an organizer.

Early reports indicated the demonstration was planned by the "popular committees" – local groups organized to oppose the construction of the wall – as well as the Fatah movement.

Last Friday, protesters in the village of Ni'lin also managed to tear down a section of Israel's separation wall. Residents of the village, like those in many towns along the route of the wall, participate in weekly demonstrations against the barrier and the associated annexation of their land.

Intended to be 709 kilometers in length, Israel had completed 413 kilometers of the wall by June 2009, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The barrier, in reality a network of walls, fences, watchtowers and checkpoints, snakes through the interior of the West Bank, looping around Israeli settlements and fragmenting Palestinian communities. In some places, the barrier reaches 22 kilometers past the 1967 borders and deep into Palestinian land.

The International Court of Justice ruled the separation wall illegal under international law in 2004. Israel maintains the barrier is for its security.

We refuse to be put in cages

One of the main proponents of nonviolent action, Mustafa Barghouthi, applauded the breach, stating that it was the natural outcome of failed negotiations to bring it down.

"This is just the beginning of a popular decision taken by Palestinians to demolish the apartheid wall because they refuse to live like slaves and be imprisoned in cages like what happened in South Africa," he said in an interview.

Barghouthi, the secretary-general of the Palestinian National Initiative, added that more resolutions would be required to challenge Israel, such as establishing Palestinian institutions over Areas B and C of the West Bank, as they are considered Palestinian lands. He added that it was necessary to violate Israeli orders, stressing at the same time the importance of working to put an end to the separation wall.

Mushir Ghazzal, an organizer with the popular struggle coordination committee, said in a statement after the demonstration, "Today's events prove that we must not wait for Israel to end its occupation on its own – we Palestinians should do it with our own two hands.

"Like the Berlin Wall at the time, Israel's wall seems to us an undefinable reality, but twice this week it has caved in to the pressure of ordinary people fighting for their rights."

The same international community which celebrates the fall of the Berlin Wall ignores a seperation barrier that is longer and higher, annexes Palestinian land, changes borders, encompasses illegal settlements and denies basic rights. These protests should be celebrated as an act of resistance

Mr. Netanyahu, tear down this wall!

It is only a wall! What is so evil about a wall? Walls are what build homes! I am sure Muslim kingdoms built walls in the past. And also, Anthony, the Berlin Wall, similar to the one in Canaan, is a response to violence. And throwing molotov cocktails is not a way to prove non-violence.

Yes, but we choose to put up the walls to surround us Liam. Palestinians are resisting walls that jail them and destroys their freedom. Walls erected, molotov cocktails....these are all responses to violence. When does Israel make a peaceful overture. We've been waiting over 50 years!

Liam, the problem with the wall is that it has created a ghetto out of Palestine. The wall will separate a Palestinian's home from his farmland, which leaves it open for thieves to steal crops or settlers to build homes on their private property.

This kind of wall is inherently violent!! There is NEVER a good reason to imprison an entire population (after displacing them and fragmenting their homeland!) If it's only a wall as you say (liam), then try living in it and experiencing it for yourself! Then tell me "it's only a wall"!!!!

A wall is simply a mass of concrete. It's ephemeral, symbolic only, and can certainly by demolished by justice. The wall will come down, it's only a question of when and how.

I have just come back from a 12-day trip to Israel/Palestine and have seen the wall myelf, at several points. The intricate network of Israeli settlements, roads for Israelis only, and the wall have resulted in the legalized theft of Palestinians' land. It dehumanizes both peoples.

The liars, Hillary, Sarkozy and Merkel are commemorating the fall of the Berlin wall, but more and more people are seeing the truth, they are accomplices of a bigger and more criminal wall being build. You have the right to tear it down.

Formidable ! Every day Palestinians are fighting to preserve human dignity. The wall will fall, because the Palestinians will fall this wall of shame.

Before I built a wall I'd ask to know What I was walling in or walling out, And to whom I was like to give offense. Something there is that doesn't love a wall, That wants it down."

Liam, the wall is illegal due to a 14-1-0 vote by the International Court of Justice. It annexes Palestinian territory overtaken by illegal settlements encouraged and built by Israelis. What's so bad about that? It ruins people's lives.

Please, please read this very new book, "PALESTINE Israel and the U.S Empire" by Richard Becker then we understand why the wall MUST come down.
Peace

The third intifada should be all about peaceful yet stern resistance to Israeli apartheid practices. Instead of building aerosol rockets, Palestine should retrofit cars with special tires and demolish the Wall segment by segment. The objective of course is accelerating the one-state solution.

I wonder where FELIPE is hiding now. Probably nothing to criticize about. He's been saying we love to complain and nag, whereas the above proves otherwise. Our destiny is in our hands, we CAN take control and assert our will and aspirations.

It takes courage to take down a wall, and courage to live with the consequences. Hoping this non-violent demonstration of courage and justice is repeated over and over till the Israeli wall is demolished, and the occupation ended.

If Israel won't comply with the 2004 ruling of the International Court of Justice that the wall is illegal and must be dismantled, the Palestinians have to right to remove it themselves. All they're doing is enforcing the law. Tear down that wall!

As was said above by numerous commentors, this wall must fall!
Peaceful protest and direct action to improve the conditions of the Palestinians should be top priority. Bravo!
