Bethlehem - Ma'an/Agencies - The Palestinian Authority is mobilizing international support for declaring statehood, chief PLO negotiator Saeb Erekat said on Saturday.

"The idea is clear and understandable," Erekat told the Palestinian daily newspaper Al-Ayyam. "Now we mobilize."

Palestinians will bring the issue to a vote before the United Nations Security Council, which would declare a Palestinian state on the 4 June 1967 border with Israel, he explained. He called the initiative a response to Israel's policies, which would send a clear message that "settlements and other unilateral actions are null and void and do not establish rights or territory."

Erekat said he had discussed the idea more than once with the Americans and Europeans, while President Mahmoud Abbas raised the proposal with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Russian officials, who reacted positively. Abbas will seek support from Latin America by the end of the week, Erekat added, and continue to lobby Europe.

The concept was first proposed by EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, he said. "Contacts with the Europeans have been ongoing as well as with Russia and the UN. All Arab countries support the idea and will choose the right time to bring up the issue with the UN Security Council after they consult the other international powers, including Europe and even America."

Thank God. Your destiny was always within your own mind, heart and hands...it is ridiculous to wait for the uS and Israel to behave correctly. Never ask others to do for you what you can do for yourself....

May God bless this plan. Erekat and company are finally waking up and doing something for Palestine, rather than waiting eternally for US/Israel stamp of approval, which is basically an enslavement of the Palestinian people !!!

erakat who will defend this state, i know not u,abbas, fatah, the PA, or tda PLO. only hamas and the resis. have shown that they will defend pals sovereinty. i applaud ur plan but i dont believe a entity working with the zionist at this very moment r capable of anything but working with da zionist.

The plan is being manifested through actions of powerful conviction & unyielding resolve! This is Pals' defiance & triumph over US/Israel abuse, false power & oppression at its very BEST :) Palestinian prayers are being answered! Their strength of spirit is unparalleled, unbreakable & unstoppable!!

Why not? If you take the 1988 IDU as the 'birth' of the state of Palestine, then tommorow is Palestine's 21st birthday. If they were a person, then a majority of places in the world would consider them adults, and they would be given control over their own lives. Time to end the occupation.

julie are u insane lol, the UNSC cant override usa veto so this is null void. all they r doing is begging. freedom is a god given right and no man should have to beg countries that started and maintain the occuppation(usa, britain, france) for this right. if erk.is serious declare ur nation unilateral

9 ) chil / usa
14/11/2009 20:31
unilteral statehood, build a army and not a security puppet for israel. self reliance, independent away from the quartet away from the zionist who want a demilitarized state. and like all nations be ready to die for ur sovereinty. PLO dont rep. the palestinians, they rep. corruption a collaboration

10 ) chil / usa
14/11/2009 20:35
unyielding resolve lol, anytime ur president is held up in his compound and surrounded for more than 2 yrs and your PA forces do nothing to free him then u do not deserve to represent the palestinian masses.

If the PA declares a independent Palestinian state with 1967 borders - including E. Jerusalem, they will have the political. legal and moral obligation to defend the integrity and national borders of that state by all means available. Will K. Dayton permit this?

Chil/USA The UNSC can't override USA veto *true* Because the US is part of the UNSC, and that is where they have a Veto, they do not get a 'veto' power in General Assembly votes. The UN General Assembly *CAN* however override a UNSC veto, under resolution 377.

The palestinien State without a free okonomy, without a capitol (East Jerusalem is in Isolation) and without Freedom for the People in Gaza - a very stupid Plan.

In less than 24 hrs US recignized Kosovo. Russia will do the same here. More states will recognize Palestine than prsently do Kosovo. Israel has not recognized Kosovo because this declaration is exactly what they fear.US set precedent with Kosovo. it will be very hard for US to not support this act.

In any event ,these days BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) are the players... only India (due to all those cozy arms dealing sales from Israel) may drag its feet...but when it comes to BRIC ...3 out 4 is not so bad! Go For It! Declare Statehood! the international support will be there...

Declaring the State is not a PROBLEM. The Problem (and issue)is for the Arabs to desire to live in Peace with Israel. You could have declared this state in 1967 with much better results...It is the "PEACE" part which is the much bigger challenge.

Has anyone told Erekat that, when you declare independence, you have to actually control that territory? Have fun losing to Israel and humiliating yourselves again. Does anyone actually think that Palestinians could win Palestine without it being handed to them on a silver platter?

21 ) Mark of Lewiston / USA
15/11/2009 09:57
I doubt the PLO planners are taking the issue lightly. Israel is not Britain dismantling its empire. Israel is unlikely to respond only verbally. Erekat and the PLO know this full well. That is why they are starting to make the case internationally. No easy job.

22 ) chil / usa
15/11/2009 16:08
there's only one real entity in palestine that can lead the pals to statehood and they dont negotiate with israel on palestinian constants, and thats hamas. The PA take their orders from those who pay them i.e. america. This statehood talk when you cant control facts on the ground is insane.

23 ) chil / usa
15/11/2009 16:10
unless these same countries who u guys say will support a palestinian state start supporting palestine militarily and economically then there will be no state. vietnam was recognized by china and russia and many other countries but they still had to fight against imperialist for 25 straight yrs.

28 ) chil / usa
15/11/2009 20:43
Theodor Herzl the father of the zionist movement who claimed that god promised the jews the land of israel is a self-proclaimed athiest. history has proven that the creation of israel was foremost a imperialistic tactic to ensure a foothole in the middle east to control resources. bob go read

From the noise coming out of Saban insitute, US and Israel are in a tizzy over this! They know the international community and law is on your side. Declare statehood. You have natural gas fields that must be re-negotiated and an educated Palestinians living abroad that will come home. Think Positive

On a lighter note, Palestine turned 21 yesterday, to those whose religion doesn't prohibit it, let's raise a glass and wish them a happy birthday, may their adulthood be easier than their rough childhood.

Chil, Forget Hertzel, the land of ISrael was specifcally promised to the JEWS by no other than ALLAH himself. Check out Koran Surah 17 Verse 104 and Surah 5 Verse 20-21. If your a good muslim why not follow the Koran? Only when MUSLIMS accept Israel will they be following their Qur'an

Without Israel's okay on this, it won't happen. And it does not matter what the USA, UNSC, or any international coalition says. Israel is one of those countries that has proved over and over that it speaks for itself. What happened to possession is 9/10 of the law?

Israel is God's chosen people and that entire land was given to them forever by God Himself. The Old Testament warns in many places that God will judge those who take away that land and all who try to divide His Holy City Jerusalem.

I don't know why this is such wonderful news. Decades ago Arafat could have taken the billions of dollars that poured into Palestine and built an infrastructure that would have sustained the Palestinian people but no, he sunk the money into terrorism as well as his personal bank account.
