Bethlehem – Ma'an – Israeli ministers continued threatening to take unilateral measures if the Palestinian Authority (PA) declares statehood without a negotiated peace agreement.

According to Israeli sources, Benjamin Netanyahu's administration may even consider withdrawing from the Oslo Accords.

Israeli Minister of Environment Gilad Erian on Monday threatened to stop delivering taxes collected on behalf of the PA. He also threatened to erect more military checkpoints in the West Bank. "We will not allow the Palestinians to declare a state unilaterally."

Infrastructure Minister Ozi Landao's threats were more specific. "The first step: Israel will announce the annexation of all West Bank settlements and [Area C] zones to Israel, which Israel has a religious right to annex. This must be clear because Israel should respond promptly to any unilateral step by the Palestinians."

He added, "Any such declaration will not scare us, and they must realize that we could take similar steps."

Palestinians are determined to build state institutions in preparation for statehood, caretaker Prime Minister Salam Fayyad said in Ramallah on Sunday. "They're talking about unilateralism, to which we reply - yes, building state institutions state is our responsibility and we embrace it."

Meanwhile, Labor member and Israeli Trade Minister Ben Eliezer said his party would pull out of Netanyahu's right-wing coalition if the government followed through with its threats.

"The Labor party cannot continue to sit in this government if it decides to annex settlements," he told Army Radio, according to Reuters. "In my opinion this whole thing about annexation is just words. I think the Palestinian threat also is just words. A ping-pong of declarations will get us nowhere, the only way forward is to bring the sides together for negotiations."

During Israel's weekly cabinet session on Sunday, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said the current impasse would increase international support for unilaterally declaring a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.

"I don't want to ruin your day, yet, the reality is not promising," Israeli Minister of Industry Benjamin Ben Eliezer told the cabinet, "We have to resume the peace process by force, and if Abu Mazen [President Mahmoud Abbas] doesn't want to talk to us, we must find a third party to exert pressure on him, and this third party will then have to tell him that it is the Palestinians who don't want dialogue, not us."

Minister of Social Welfare Yizhak Hetzoq said holding onto settlements was paramount. "If we wish to save parts of our homeland such as Ma'ale Adumim or Gush Etzion, we have to take difficult measures such as dividing the homeland and establishing a Palestinian state."

Netanyahu warned earlier the same day that Israel was capable of declaring unilateral steps of its own. "There is no substitute for negotiations ... and any unilateral path will only unravel the framework of agreements between us and will only bring unilateral steps from Israel's side."

What a farce! Threatening to annex areas C? So in effect imprisoning Palestinians in dozens of cantons (their plan all along)? What joke!!! Let them try! Let's call the game "Competitive Unilateralism". At the end of the day, it is unilateralism that gains world support (recognition) that wins.

Forgive me, but I must disagree.. International support will be there, however in my memory, there have been very few examples where Isreal has respected the will of the UN, or the international community. And correct me if I'm mistaken, but dosn't the decleration need to clear the
UN? US VETO..

I hope this statement is true: "Barak said the current impasse would increase international support for unilaterally declaring a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders." With more international support Israeli threats weaken & their aggression/illegal activities invite more adversity upon them.

Also...the extent that Israel (with all it's mighty force & war weapons) threatens Pal is the same extent they feel threatened BY Pal. Very amazing indeed that Pal obviously has their own power, in fact Pal clearly has so much power that the world's fiercest devil Israel reacts with this much fear.

I'll stop being politically correct. If the US/Obama vetoes the recognition of the Pal.state on '67 borders, many Palestinians would see this as Obama showing his true colors/limitations and hence say "Bin Laden was right, etc." but I would say "one state NOW!!!" Status quo <- can't go on 4ever.

Israel has always complied with EVERY United Nations resolution. The problem is always that the Arabs always misinterpret the meanings of these resolutions. Israel hasbeen bending to International pressure. Israel has always respected cease-fires when they were called after defeating the enemy

Kathy, You're right, the latest Palestinian strategy needs to clear the UN and a US veto. But I believe the US' standing in the world is at risk here, will America openly reject self-determination and the most basic of human rights? It will be difficult, especially considering Israeli stubborness.

#2 / Kathy P. / USA Also, if you examine the record, the US has *never* veto'd a declaration of independence from a fledgling state. Also, please remember, your country's veto only applies in the UNSC, not in the General Assembly votes, and the GA can overrule the UNSC (Res 377)

They are annexing, but attempting to make life so miserable you leave and the remaining so impoverished you cant fight effectively and remain quarreling and fighting among yourselves for the few resources. Put an end to your feud. Unite. Declare statehood.

Bibi is trying to intimidate you. Will 2 can play that game.
Perhaps Arab intellectuals at Haifa University should have a serious discussion on what the Arab Galil should do after you declare statehood? Perhaps they should form a sucessionist movement and join the new Palestinian state...

Creidim: anyone, who thinks that UN Doc. A/RES/377 can overrule UNSC resolutions has no idea about Charter system and international law in general. A/RES/377 is a losing hippie argument.

11: A 'Losing Hippie Argument' you do realize you're talking about a resolution put forth BY the US, at a point in time (50's) where there weren't even 'hippies' And it was put forth for the express purpose of stopping a single member of the UNSC from disrupting the will of the GA.

Enough of talk! Declare Palestine Now! Bibi and his groanies are scared. Let the Pals challenge the so called SuperPower of Democratic country (America/France/Britian). They gave Kosovo independence then they must DO THE SAME FOR Palestine as well. They owe it to themFREEDOM,FREEDOM,FREEDOM IS NEAR!

UN GA has no power to adopt binding a la Chapter VII resolutions. It has no power to take over UNSC powers in that regard. That's basic treaty interpretation. The only reason 50's Korea came through, was Charter interpretation requiring presence of Russia in UNSC vote all the time, which they failed

Israel pays no attention to UN resolutions. So they declare, who is going to go in and push the occupiers out? Israel is the middle east super power like it or not. They are not going to pack their bags and go home even if the resolution did pass. Every one knows that it is just politics.

The Israelis are racist criminals that treat the Palestinians like dogs. Look at the facial expression of Ehud Barak, for example, he looks like a spoiled child caught with a hand in the cookie jar (stealing) but nobody is there to guide and reprimand him.

ten years ago,Abu Ammar( may Allah rest his soul) threatened to declare a Palestinian statehood during Netanyahu's office term i know it was no more than a cry of anger and a sign of israel's denial to all signed agreements.what shocked us that the international community turned a blind eye .

The international community or the security council is more likely to support equal rights in a one state solution. This threat is more creditable than declaring independence. One state with equal rights and representation is a universally recognized system of justice and peace. Demand your rights!

Only the factions of resistance headed by hamas can confront the facts on the ground as da UN & PA talk money
