Bethlehem – Ma’an – “This is the right time” to seek Security Council recognition of a Palestinian state, Chief PLO negotiator Saeb Erekat said in response to comments made by EU officials calling the move "premature."

Earlier Tuesday Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, told reporters in Brussels ahead of a Foreign Ministers meeting that he "would hope that we would be in a position to recognize a Palestinian state but there has to be one first, so I think it is somewhat premature."

Erekat responded almost immediately through an interview with Agence France Presse (AFP) from Cairo, saying “it is time to recognize a Palestinian state on the borders of 4 June 1967 with Jerusalem as its capital.” Arguing the case, Erekat argued that the EU recognized the State of Kosovo before other official channels supported its claim for independence.

Sweden is not alone in determining EU policy, Erekat then quipped, noting other EU countries support the Palestinian decision and adding that as of yet, the EU does not have a common foreign policy.

On Sunday, Erekat announced that members of the Palestinian Authority would seek recognition as a state from the UN Security Council.

The West has used up the entire potential of their stooge Abbas. They will do nothing to save his face or any other part of him. The time has passed for his manipulation of paper. And what other strength has Abbas than originator of a paper state. And whining when struck down by his master.

The shortsighted EU and US did not recognise the independence of Slovenia even advocated for a unified Yugoslavia. The Slovenian government sought international assistance in negotiating a peaceful breakup of Yugoslavia but was rebuffed. But Slovenia is on the map now. Move forward. Go to BRIC.

I agree. Time for a Palestinian state. Of course Israel will object, but what's new?

Time for Erekat and Co. to go. They've brought nothing but shame, disgrace, and ridiculous concessions. Palestinian rights span ALL of Palestine from Safad to Jericho and Al-Khalil. Their formula simply failed, why are we kidding ourselves. Jerrold sorry but 2 states is as dead as a doornail.

Lisa, I agree about BRIC being a theoratical alternative to the hegemonial security council, vetoes, etc. But I doubt even that will be effective. Only actions from within (Pal and Israeli society) will yield results (one state for all religions to live in peace).
