Salfit – Ma'an – Before tossing goods made in Israeli settlements into a fire on Tuesday, Prime Minister Salam Fayyad affirmed the dedication of the Palestinian Authority to ridding local markets of the goods, and ridding the West Bank of the settlements entirely.

The products being tossed were all found in the Salfit municipality, southeast of Nablus. They were found on trucks and in shops in the district, and would have been for sale to Palestinians. Much of the time goods from settlements are discounted or spoiled.

In his speech, Fayyad explained the long-term destruction the settlement project has on Palestine, and the damage to the Palestinian national project of ending the occupation and establishing a Palestinian state. Purchasing settlement goods supports the industries built on confiscated Palestinian land, which Palestinians seek as part of an eventual state.

“This is a collective responsibility, and the Palestinian National Authority will be the first supporter, but we must join all our efforts on official and popular levels to ensure the continuation of this campaign to clean our markets of settlements products,” Fayyad said. He said the first priority would be to strengthen the Palestinian industries so local products could replace those coming from settlements in both Palestinian and international markets.

Along with Palestinian efforts to shut down markets to settlement goods, Fayyad called on the international community to put pressure on Israel to cease its activities in Palestinian areas, particularly the construction of settlements. He praised the position of the United Kingdom, which began labeling settlement products, and parts of South America, which have started a boycott of the goods altogether.

Also at the event were the Minister of the National Economy Hassan Abu Labada, Salfit Governor Munir Al-Abushi, Salfit's mayor, as well as several police and local officials.

I wish him luck with that. The part they fail to explain though, is that the goods being destroyed have been bought by Arab resellers. So they are the ones who are immediately punished. Second to be punished are the Arabs who were buying the "discounted" goods. If the Palestinians don't have the means by which to produce the goods, then who will ultimately pay the price?? The Palestinians will. After all, if the Palestinians had the ability to produce the goods they would already be doing so.

It's a good start but he should be calling for a boycott of all Israeli goods, not just settlement products. Palestinian civil society has been calling for this for 4.5 years and it's time the PNA try to catch up. Learn more at http://www.bdsmovement.net/

Boycott was instrumental in toppling apartheid in South Africa, and it will be instrumental in toppling apartheid in Israel and occupied Palestine.

Felipe, self-reliance starts with sacrifices. The dosage of evil (settlement goods) cannot go on forever, giving them legitimacy and an economic advantage. They are encroaching on the Palestinian state.

I had the privilege of meeting the PM in 2008 as the coordinator of an interfaith delegation and was truly and completely impressed by the focus of this great man. I believe his efforts to rebuild the Palestinian economy and work with Israel to put Palestinians in charge of their own security represent giant steps forward. However, I believe that endorsing a campaign against settlement products will only bring about a need for the State of Israel to defend and even to market those products.

Palestinians do not have to have wasted Fayyad's efforts , that seek to eliminate the production of the settlements, and they must support the national economy and the boycott of Israeli products however, that would lead to undermining Israel outside the international humanitarian law.

This is a good start. While I agree with Nader that some Palestinians may have lost money (and I hope they were refunded by the PA for thier loss), I also agree with Nour -- Self-reliance comes starts with sacrifices. Palestinians need to unite behind PM Fayyad's vision to achieve the arabic dream of a Palestinian State. Long live Palestine! Long Live Peace!
