Ramallah – Ma’an – During its weekly cabinet meeting the Palestinian Authority announced it would provide humanitarian aid for the victims of the Haiti earthquake last week, and form a committee to follow up on its distribution.

In its Monday evening meeting the cabinet expressed its condolences for those who lost relatives in Haiti and declared the solidarity of the Palestinian people with the people of Haiti. It was further declared that the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was mandated to monitor the situation of the Palestinian community in Haiti and to provide humanitarian relief to the devastated country.

Settlements and Jerusalem

Caretaker Prime Minister Salam Fayyad called on the Quartet to not recognize Israeli preconditions imposed on illegal settlement expansion, exemplified in continued construction throughout the occupied Palestinian territories as a means to resume negotiations swiftly, he said.

Cabinet members further called on the Obama administration and the international community to pressure Israel into halting its attempts at Judaizing Jerusalem through continued settlement construction in occupied East Jerusalem and expressed hope that the case for Jerusalem will be brought before the UN on 27 January 2010.

Members condemned statements made by an Israeli official considering Palestinians as a demographic threat and said that Israeli policies were geared towards expelling Palestinians from Jerusalem, in turn preventing them from establishing an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders.

National boycott of settlement goods

The launching of the National Dignity Fund last week by the PA to clear the Palestinian market of settlement goods was deemed an act of self-determination, and applauded by the cabinet.

Amnesty and the Gaza blockade

A recent Amnesty International report describing the Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip as collective punishment under international law and suffocating the Palestinian population was praised by the cabinet.

Palestine Culture Day

It was declared that 13 March would be considered Palestinian Culture Day, celebrated on the birthday of Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. A committee is to be established including ministers and cultural figureheads to implement and monitor a budget for the celebrations within that of the Ministry of Culture.

International donors

Members of the PA cabinet in Ramallah welcomed the willingness of major donor countries to increase the transfer of assistance to the PA following a meeting in Brussels last week. The PA cabinet had asked all donors to fulfill their financial pledges given that the PA is facing financial difficulty, members said.

The PA sending aid to Haiti... how ridiculous. They should be sending it to their desperate compatriots in Gaza.

Ma'an also reports on the EU signing a new aid agreement with Fayyad. So we in the EU are sending our tax money to the PA so they can send it to the other side of the world? And when it gets to Haiti things are so chaotic there is little chance of it reaching the Palestinian community there. Besides we in the EU are already sending aid to Haiti.

Get a grip, Ramallah.

Perhaps its a statement of sovereignty, one nation lending a hand to another? But I agree. Its silly and takes away from the more credible decision eg. removing settlement products from Palestinian supermarket shelves.

Nobody is impressed with "Help Haiti" haute-couture and posturing. The money is better spent on an anti-corruption agency in Palestine, or new books for school children, or simply saved into a national investment fund.

Why Haiti when stood and watched your brothers being slaughtered and now they want to be the donor and humanitarian, the dog that wags its tail on world stage. Why Haiti ? Why Haiti you oximorons?

"

They wait UNTIL Monday to express condolences and "monitor the situation"? Maybe this sheds some light on why they can't reach an agreement with HAMAS or Israel!

"A recent Amnesty International report describing the Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip as collective punishment under international law and suffocating the Palestinian population was praised by the cabinet. "

It is the "Egytian/Israeli siege". Even the Teheran Times mentions Egypt as part of the siege.

im slapping my head as i read stupid comments from people like haifa...... the PA couldnt really do anything about the whole gaza conflict to be fair to them, they tried their best to end conflict, plus what exactly do u imagine them to do anyway? There is nothing wrong with donating to Haitti, because it expresses the caring of one nation to another... if palestinians want a country of their own they should start by not criticizing their government....

Sahal - I agree, they should donate and show they care about another nation.

But Palestinians should be able to criticize their own government. They elected them and have every right to express their opinions.

Sorry people but helping anyone anyplace when a disaster hits its only human and right. Pals are pretty closed minded people and can not see 2 feet ahead of themselves. You gotta wake up and not be a muslim extremist country , group or whatever, get over it and the world will welcome you.
I wish you peace from Tel Aviv where you used to come daily till your crazy friends started to blow up innocent people in buses and restaurants.

blah blah blah. this is good public relations, but the p.a. should also spend some more money on the boycott of settlement goods in the O.T. they should also recognize that they need to have elections and win them if they want to be considered legitimate by their own people on the one hand and not just a weak quisling to be dictated to by Israel on the other.
