Gaza – Ma'an – Gaza's de facto government demanded justice from Egypt over the death of four tunnel workers poisoned by noxious gas on Wednesday night, calling for those responsible to be put on trial.

Hamas party spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said Thursday that at least 40 tunnel workers had been poisoned by toxic gasses since the siege on Gaza began, accounting for almost 30% of the tunnel-related deaths, which stand at 145, the spokesman said.

Abu Zuhri said he considered the targeting of tunnel workers by Egyptian forces illegal, and immoral considering its aggravation of the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza.

Wednesday night medics said workers had gone to the tunnel that had in fact been "filled with poisonous gas a week ago, to confirm the toxin had dissipated," Adham Abu Salmiya, spokesman for Gaza medical services, told Ma'an. "They were shocked to find it had actually remained in the tunnel, resulting in the deaths and injuries."
