Gaza - Ma'an - Freeing Palestinian detainees in Israeli jails is a religious duty, a military wing within the Salah Ad-Din Brigades said Monday.

A statement issued by the Resistance Committee said Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit will remain captive until Palestinian prisoners are released, and called on detainees to remain steadfast as factions work toward securing their release.

"It appears that the occupation forces are unable to understand that the factions holding Shalit will not back down from their demands, particularly the exchange deal," the statement read.

"Israel is playing games and wasting time to make changes but will never weaken our position or push us to accept Israeli offers and solutions."

Reports that the Israeli government has tried to secure the release and deportation of "wanted" Palestinian prisoners "are just rumors," the Resistance Committee wrote.

On Sunday, Shalit's parents began a 12-day march from their home in northern Israel to Jerusalem, to mark the fourth anniversary of their son's kidnapping in a bid to pressure the Israeli government to ensure his release.

Shalit was captured by militant forces in Gaza in June 2006 in a cross-border raid. Since, German-mediated talks between Hamas and Israel have sought to secure a prisoner swap deal in exchange for Shalit's deal, with both sides accusing the other of stalling progress.
