Turkish officials: Flotilla raid an 'event between friends'

WASHINGTON (Ma'an) -- Senior Turkish officials in Washington reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining friendly relations with Israel, Turkish media reported Thursday.

The delegation, headed by Turkey's Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu, was visiting Washington weeks after media reports that the US threatened to pull out of arms deals if Turkey did not review its criticism of Israel. The US and Turkey both denied the reports.

Turkish-Israeli relations have been strained since Turkey condemned Israel's Operation Cast Lead offensive on Gaza. Israel's raid on a Turkish Gaza-bound aid ship, in which Israeli naval forces killed nine Turkish citizens on board, further deteriorated ties between the allies.

During meetings with US officials, one of the Turkish diplomats reportedly described the 31 May raid as an event "between two friends," which did not affect Turkey's relations with Israel or with the Jewish people, but with the Israeli government, the Turkish daily Zaman said.

The diplomat also said that the incident was shocking because it occurred between two allies, according to the paper.

If Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had agreed to his Turkish counterpart's request for an apology, the matter could have been resolved sooner, the sources added.

This has been more or less the Turkish stance from the start -- our problem is with the current Israeli government not Israel, an apology really is necessary, etc. But no fear. Enormous damage has been done to the Israeli relationship with Turkey, and any Turkish leader who takes measures against Israel will be able to count on considerable public support from here on out. Politicians are not known for their ability to ignore such considerations.

It is official and true, why the Turkish diplomat who made the "between two friends" statements is not identified?

I read you comments, the question is are you speaking as a Turk, or as a Jerk, which is your usual M.O.

Sounds as you are trying to intimidate or insult muslim countries, which would be "unRamadan" to most. Turkey is not an arab country. Must compare oranges with oranges. Turkey was smart to realizing the truth about the flotilla: they tried to brake a LEGAL blockade and failed.

"an event between friends" (!) The families of the innocent slain must feel warm cozzies over having such friends. Shame on Turkey and the US, who undoubtably had their hands in this one.

Not quite so innocent, many had boarded the ship separtely, as a group, armed with knives, which they brandished, showing they weren't there merely to protest, they had the obvious full intent of repelling the IDF who were making a legal inspection

Once on board, they contrived other weapons, such as clubs & chains to add to their aresenal
