GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian man was shot dead Monday after fighting broke out between family members near his home in the central Gaza Strip, a Health Ministry official said.

Director of ambulance and emergency services Muawiya Hassanein said Salama An-Nabaheen, 33, died of a gunshot wound after relatives opened fire near his home in the Al-Bureij refugee camp.

"The fighting broke out between sons of the families in the refugee camp," Hassanein explained.

An investigation by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights released on Tuesday said An-Nabaheen was shot three times, in the shoulder, back and foot, and was pronounced dead when he arrived to the hospital.

The shooting was "apparently motivated by a dispute in the al-Nabahin family, which broke out in 1994. In the context of such dispute, in 2006, the victim's brother, Ra'ed Ramadan al-Nabahin, was killed by his cousins," PCHR reported.

Gaza government crackdown on violence

The death follows an announcement on Monday that Gaza government police units and stations were instructed by the general commander to "deal strictly" with clan brawls, particularly when firearms are used.

Abu Ubayda Al-Jarrah told police to deploy heavily when family-related fighting breaks out, telling officers to "use an iron fist," after several Palestinians were killed in clan clashes across the coastal enclave.

Several human rights organizations have attributed the rise in family-feud related shootouts to the misuse of weapons meant for resistance factions by civilians, calling on the government to appropriately regulate firearms in the Strip.

On 21 August, the Gaza government further announced it would be confiscating all unlicensed weapons, prosecuting those they find possessing firearms illegally.
