GAZA CITY (Ma'an) - A Palestinian family in Gaza has received news that their son, Mahmoud Abu Rideh, died a few days ago in a US bombing in Afghanistan.
The man's family, from Bani Sheila - a town east of Khan Younis - heard from friends of their son that Mahmoud was with a group of 'mujahideen' before the airstrike. Abu Rideh had moved to the UK in 1995 and received a residence permit in November 1998. Some of his family members are British nationals. After the 9/11 attacks, Abu Rideh was detained along with 17 others and he was banned from meeting his family. Ma'an reported at the time that Abu Rideh was detained.
His conditions were so severe that he apparently attempted to kill himself three times.
