Hamas: Free and fair elections need unity

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Deputized Parliament speaker and Hamas leader Ahmad Bahar said Wednesday that honest elections could not take place without a unity agreement that "restores the national rights of Palestinians."

The official reiterated the Hamas position in a conference address in Gaza City, calling elections the right of the Palestinians guaranteed under the Basic Law, but for the elections to be "carried out by a legitimate government."

Because the calling of elections must be backed by a presidential decree, Hamas says, there can be no legitimate elections, as Abbas' mandate ran out - by some accounts in 2009, and others in 2010 - and he is no longer accepted by the party as head of the Palestinian Authority.

Commenting on the resignation of the PA cabinet earlier in the week, and Abbas' reappointment of resigned Prime Minister Salam Fayyad and request for him to form a new government, Bahar said the move was "no more than a desperate attempt to absorb the anger of the Palestinians."

Free and Fair elections needs an end to Occupation. What kind of elections does one have when they are long-term occupied...so u elect a gov't to govern under Israel (and Western) occupation? U are competing to be the puppet of Israel. First we need to get rid of occupation and after we can have elections! We can't even move around, work, got to school, live like normal people! There is no such thing as democracy and elections under Occupation. This is absurd.

yea u right #1 hamas should drop its concerns and unify with a group that is working with israel to destroy the palestinian resistance, steal money, aids israel in murding women and children in the gaza war, stopping the goldstone report, daily intelligence meetings with the occupation forces. so yea #1 hamas should unify with the iof's puppet. maybe next god and the devil can have unity. or maybe a rapist & a rape victum can have unity. u must realize abbass' interest r only monetary.

Hamas is smart & they know what's best & they know what's going on.

Israel needs to be destroyed first off. Then there woul;dn't be all these problems.

Get on with it!

Pissing in the wing achieves nothing.

Two sides pissing in the wind is worse.
