Hamas: Prisoners to be free if more soldiers captured

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Hamas lawmaker Ahmad Bahar on Sunday urged Palestinian factions to form militant groups with the aim of capturing Israeli soldiers.

The deputized Palestinian Legislative Council speaker said kidnapping soldiers would pressure Israeli authorities to release Palestinian political prisoners. He made the remarks in a speech commemorating Palestinian Prisoners' Day in Gaza City.

Bahar urged the captors of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit to insist on their demands for a swap deal to release Palestinian detainees. Shalit was seized in a cross-border raid in June 2006. Negotiations to secure his release have so far failed.

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Palestine Maxwell Gaylord on Sunday urged Israel to comply with international human rights law in its treatment of Palestinian prisoners, particularly women and children in Israeli jails.

In a statement from his office to mark Prisoners' Day, Gaylord noted that the practice of detaining Palestinians in Israel was contrary to the Geneva Conventions.

"Israel's policies and practices regarding Palestinian prisoners raise a number of concerns, including a lack of clarity on the legal status of such prisoners, the location and conditions of their incarceration, the need for access to legal counsel and representation, the issue of administrative detention, and the prevention of family visits for detainees from Gaza," the statement said.

Mr Gaylord, do you have anything to say about the applicability of the Geneva Conventions to the case of Gilad Shalit?
It seems that by your statements you are very anti-semitic and biased.

Are Palestinians still hoping for a 2-state solution to the Israeli occupation? I support them 100% but hope that Israel will be absorbed into a 'greater democratic Palestine (democratic and majority-ruled). Israel, as a Jewish entity, must be destroyed.

I strongly urge Ahmad Bahar and the Gaza Strip Palestinians to forget about any more prisoner swap deals. We in Israel are tired and sick and sick and tired of these insane negotiations. Likewise, we in Israel feel the SAME way about holding Palestinian prisoners. Let me repeat that: WE FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT HOLDING PALESTINIAN PRISONERS. The U.N. has little influence with either side and everybody knows this. Believe me, the only solution is to expel the Palestinians to Jordan.

If Hamas is saying they openly are pursuing ways to kidnap Israeli soldiers then they are being 100% HYPOCRITICAL if they complain that Israel is being to tough on them. Either they want a war or they want peace, theres no middle ground. Stop crying like babies when you are attacked just so you can fight all you want. It's disgusting, it's immoral, it's hypocritical. It's muslim extermist

This is why hamas is responsible for EVERY rocket attack, and every act of violence coming out of gaza. Here is a hamas lawmaker encouraging the residents of gaza to carry out kidnappings of israeli soldiers.

JG, According to your own logic, you are very anti-Arabic, anti-Muslim, and biased, too.

Palestinian resistance to apartheid israel will never go away until the occupied Palestinian people get their juctice and liberty. It is simple. Israel and the israeli people will never have peace as long as they continue their illegal occupation of Palestinian land.

Re JG #1 'Mr Gaylord, do you have anything to say about the applicability of the Geneva Conventions to the case of Gilad Shalit? It seems that by your statements you are very anti-semitic and biased. ' I take it you're unaware Gilad Shalit was neither a woman, a child, nor a civilian. I also fail to see how criticism of Israel -- even if unjustified -- can be equated to anti-semitism. Have I revealed a prejudice against Germans if I denounce Naziism?

Re Yehuda Solomon #3 'Believe me, the only solution is to expel the Palestinians to Jordan.' This makes it clear there is indeed only one solution -- but not the one you suggest. I don't think there ever can be a peaceful Israel that respects the rights of Palestinians -- or of anyone else.

Re Colin Wright # 8, Geneva Conventions are not only applicable to "women, children and civilians" but also to Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. Don't you think that he is also entitled to visitations by the Red Cross?

Israel has already agreed to at least 500 prisoners for Shalit but that is not good enough for Hamas. They prefer 500 Pal families to suffer rather than trading for one lonely Israeli. More kidnappings will lead to many more deaths in Gaza. This is a given.

Shalit, a soldier committing war crimes against Gaza citizens, should be treated acording to Geneva conventions too. Even though Shalit was commiting a war crime by laying seige to Gaza. Things must be done in order. Israel started committing war crimes much earlier than Hamas. And when Israel starts treating all of its prisoners according to Geneva conventions I am sure Hamas will treat Shalit in the same way. Other wise I have very little sympathy for war criminal Shalit.
