RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas has called an urgent meeting following US President Barack Obama’s speech on the Middle East on Thursday, a PLO official said.

Saeb Erekat said Abbas appreciated Obama's efforts to reach a comprehensive solution to the conflict and his remarks on the right to self-determination and dignity.

Erekat said the Palestinians remained committed to all previous agreements with Israel, "hoping that the Israeli government will do the same, to give the peace process the chance it deserves."

But his tentative partners in the Islamist Hamas movement immediately called on Obama to take "concrete steps" not merely issue "slogans" in support of Palestinian independence and an end to Israeli occupation.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri, however, said Obama's speech amounted to "throwing dust in the eyes." Hamas, he said, calls on the Palestinian leadership not to hang its hopes on the speech and to coordinate with Palestinian factions to confront "US-Israeli arrogance."

In a key speech at the State Department in Washington, Obama called for a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders but said a bid for UN recognition of a unilateral proclamation of statehood would not work.

The Hamas movement, which rules the Gaza Strip and this month signed a surprise unity agreement with Abbas's Fatah party, took a less cautious approach, responding immediately to Obama's address.

"What Obama needs to do is not to add slogans but to take concrete steps to protect the rights of the Palestinian people and the Arab nation," Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said.

Obama did not say PA state to the 67 lines as Izrael news is trying to say in order to get the Pals to think Obama is for a PA state to the "Green Line".
What Obama did say was 2 state solution to the 67 lines WITH TRADE OFFS BETWEEN THE PARTIES. NOTHING NEW

President Obama is a sick joke that was put onto the American people, and now it seems the rest of the world is seeing this man for what he is. As one radio personality stated, Pres. Obama, whenever he is in the room is the most unqualified person there. The only hope that America has, which means the world, is that we wake up and vote him out of office, because 4 more years and we may have nothing to worry about, providing of course that the world doesn't end on the 21st, as predicted

Hamas is right. Obama is still actively suporting the apartheid state of israel, in defiance of the entire world. Truly disgusting!

There will never be peace until israel withdraws its soldiers and settlers from the entire west bank and east jerusalem as stipulated by UN resolutions and International Law.

Big Mike is right about Obama's words being nothing new!!

Obama did NOT support 1967 borders !!

Instead, he supported borders "based upon" 1967 ceasefire lines, which

- Cearly requires Palestinians to negotiate with the Jewish State,
to implement those two words, "based upon", and

- Cearly the Jewish State will "link" border negotiations to others,
requiring Palestinians to negotiate, and finalize, the Jerusalem, recognition, and refugee return issues, at the same time !!!!

Prior to, and throughout, the 63 years since Israel's rebirth, as a Jewish State, the Arab states and Palestinians have proven, that their intentions are extremely hostile, if not gencidal !!

Until that changes, with Arab States, and a potential Palestinian state,
proving their intentions both to recognize, and to live in peace along side Israel, as the Jewish Homeland, there will remain neither a basis for a peace deal, nor for Israel to give-up the more "defensible" borders it won !!

President Obama is deceptive and powerful. So far he and his czars are getting a one-world dictatorship far better organized than have previous presidential administrations. Israel is the key to preventing a dominant
regional Islamic rulership, as an important component of the emerging one-world government. Israel will use whatever political strategies and military force necessary to maintain its survival. Isreal will not give land,it
will recover all of its covenant lands that are occupied

Before Obama wields his veto power against Palestine at the UN as he has clearly threatened, he should consider how that is going to effect America's standing in the region, and how he's going to explain and justify his actions. If he is serious about peace and promoting democracy and freedom, he should refrain from throwing his weight around as if he was just another repressive dictator. Be prepared. If Palestine's credibility is not in question, Obama's will be.
