GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- The international community should not pay attention to Israel's incitement against Palestinian national unity, leader of a coalition of independent figures Yasser Al-Wadieh said Friday.

During an address to the US Congress on Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed President Mahmoud Abbas to "tear up" the recently-signed Palestinian unity deal.

Al-Wadieh said Israel was trying to thwart the reconciliation agreement between Hamas and Fatah and to enforce national division so it could continue to build settlements on Palestinian land.

Under the unity deal, an interim government of non-partisan figures will be formed to prepare for national elections.

Al-Wadieh said Palestinian leaders were consulting regional and international parties to support the transitional government, but added that Palestinians would guarantee its success.

"Palestinians have chosen the unity path and they are the ones who will work to ensure its success, because [unity] is the only way to confront the Israeli occupation and its repeated provocations," Al-Wadieh said.

The interim government will have a huge role to play to remove all residues of division, he said, adding that the project would need the support of all Palestinians.

Al-Wadieh praised Egypt's ongoing efforts to mediate the reconciliation, and thanked the Arab League for its support and assistance.
