RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- Palestinian political party Fatah was granted full membership to the Socialist International on Friday, according to the movement's international relations commission in Ramallah.

The accreditation was granted during the organization’s recent summit in Athens, Greece.

The Fatah delegation to the summit was headed by Nabil Shaath, the commissioner for international relations.

The Socialist International was established in 1951 and promotes itself on "progressive politics for a fairer world." It is a worldwide organization of social democratic, socialist and labor parties with over 162 political parties and organizations involved.

The Fatah movement joined in 1996 as an observer party. In 2000, it became a consultative party and now it is a full member, becoming the main social democratic party representing Palestine in the Socialist International.

I guess this explains one reason why we have not heard a peep from Abbas, Fatah and/or the PA criticising George Papandreou (PM of Greece and President of the [not so] "Socialist International") or Greece for their cowardly actions as Israel's lapdog and preventing the Gaza flotilla from going to Gaza.
