RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- The Detainees Center in the Gaza Strip reported Friday that 1,552 Palestinian citizens had been arrested by Israeli forces in the first half of 2011, including 215 children.

Nineteen Palestinian lawmakers from the Hamas Movement are among those arrested in 2011.

It is unclear how many have been detained indefinitely.

The Center appealed to the international community to actively intervene to curb Israel's persistent violation of human rights in Palestine.

It's interesting really: all Palestinians are under some form of detention. It ranges from the relatively mild forms practiced on Palestinians with Israeli citizenship -- uncertain legal protection, restricted access to property, etc -- to the more severe restrictions imposed on the people in the West Bank to the open-air prison of Gaza to actual incarceration. However, no Palestinian in Palestine can truly be said to be free. What he may or may not do is always decided by his Jewish master.
