BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Palestinian Authority minister of Foreign Affairs Riyad Al-Maliki said Thursday that the PA has recognized the new state of South Sudan.

An official letter has been sent to the minister of foreign affairs in South Sudan.

The Palestinian ministry is following up on all diplomatic and legal procedures as a result of the recognition and is keen to build strong bilateral relations with the new state, Al-Maliki added.

South Sudan has a proven successful track record
of achieving statehood, so the PA should invite South Sudan
to share their experience, to help, to advise, and to mediate,
both reconciliation talks with Hamas, and peace talks with Israel !!!

Wonderful. Set up an exchange of ambassadors right away. So if admitted to the UN in time for the (if it happens) Palestinian vote for nationhood, be sure and add it to the list of countries the PA can depend on for support.

Why is the PA in the business of recognizing anybody? Since when has its role been to function as a state? Where is the PLO, the political (albeit unelected and dormant) arm of the Palestinian people?

Let's hope South Sudan recognises the State of Palestine in September if not, prior. The PA have every right to recognise any nation on the basis of being an institution like the Arab League.
