GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Renewed airstrikes across the Gaza Strip late Thursday killed a Palestinian teenager and injured more than a dozen others amid an escalation in violence that left some 20 people dead throughout the day.

Just after midnight Friday, Israeli warplanes launched a series of raids targeting Gaza City, the northern towns of Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahiya, and Khan Younis in the south.

Gaza medical official Adham Abu Salmiya said an airstrike on a home near the former intelligence services headquarters in Gaza City killed 13-year-old Mahmoud Abu Samra and injured 18 others.

A Palestinian was also missing in the Rafah tunnel area, medics said.

Elsewhere, Apache helicopters fired at least two missiles toward a Palestinian military site in the town of Beit Lahiya and a missile near Khan Younis landed in an open area and caused no injuries or damage.

A Ma'an correspondent described a "state of panic" across Gaza as Israel renewed bombings just hours after an airstrike killed six Palestinians in Rafah, near Egypt's border.

The airstrike hit a home belonging to Popular Resistance Committees official Khaled Shaath, who was killed instantly. His two-year-old son Malek later died of injuries sustained in the strike.

The attacks killed four others in Rafah. Among them were PRC military wing chief Abu Awad Nayrab and PRC operatives Imad Hamad, Abu Jamil Shaath and Khaled Masri, medical officials said.

Israel says three of those Palestinians were involved in planning a series of attacks that left eight Israelis dead near the southern resort city of Eilat. Israeli forces also killed five attackers, officials said.

The PRC confirmed the deaths in a statement posted to its website.

A PRC spokesman, Abu Mujahed, said Israel fired the first shots Thursday and would be held responsible for "all the consequences of its crimes" in Rafah.

The military wing of the PRC claimed responsibility for launching two rockets toward the coastal city of Ashkelon, while Israel's army said its "Iron Dome" infiltration system stopped four attacks.

An Israeli military source told Ma'an that operations were underway in southern Gaza following a series of attacks in the south of Israel, whose leadership has blamed Gaza.

The country's defense minister, Ehud Barak, said earlier in a statement that "The real source of the terror is in Gaza and we will act against them with full force and determination."

Barak also said the attack reflected a "weak Egyptian hold" on the Sinai.

PLO official Saeb Erekat urged Israel against taking any "irresponsible" actions in Gaza, saying it "stands warned of any possible aggressive action or collective punishment measures."

"Our position is clear. We are against violence in all its forms. Such violence does not advance the Palestinian cause for freedom and independence," Erekat said in a statement.

"However, we will not accept for such attacks to be used a pretext for aggression."

Ismail Radwan, a senior Hamas leader, condemned the "massacre in Rafah" and told Ma'an that "this crime won’t stop the resistance and won’t stop all Palestinians."

He added that Hamas was taking every relevant action following Israel's threats.

Earlier, the interior ministry in Gaza said Egyptian authorities have closed the Rafah crossing amid the sharp increase in violence in Gaza and southern Israel.

Okay,, this just opens the door for more retaliation attacks against Israel. Because the earlier operations against Israeli Zionist soldiers were in response to long string of attacks on Palestinians!! Israel MUST STOP attacking Palestinians_ real simple, then there will be no reaosn to retaliate. Israel doesn't get to get away with their blatant attacks constantly-- they will pay every time they escalate aggression against Palestine.

Israel massacres besieged Palestinians with sophisticated American fighter jets at no risk to their own kind. The Palestinian's response with crude rockets is mostly symbolic. But those rockets do confirm that they will not accept defeat, they “give proof through the night that (their) flag is still there.”

Israel is not content to kill or capture the perpetrators, Israel then attacks and murders the innocent who new nothing of the attack and had nothing to do with it. Israel is the problem. Israel kills innocents every time anything happens and even when nothing happens to an Israeli. Israel is scum of the earth.

Where is the part of the story relating that those in the building knew they occupied a target, especially after Palestinian terrorists shot at a public bus known to carry tourists on Israeli highways? The world must admit that terrorists firing randomly into towns, cities, & roads, is not a means to demonstrate that a people is ready to live peacefully. Is that really a stretch of the imagination? It seems more like common sense.

One of those Gazans killed by Israeli strikes was one of the abductors (see Ynet) of Gilad Shalit. No terrorist would ever be complacent whether in Gaza, the Westbank, Lebanon or Egypt. We will remember and we shall permanently stop them both with force and ruse.

Some headlines in the US are saying that Israel say that a gunman that came through Egypt kill seven Israelis in Eilat. What Israel is doing striking southern Gaza?.

Whatever is happening, Gaza is targeted. A strategy to get out of the internal problems faced by Netanyahu. Tragic.

Radwan call this a massacre..???.. if the Arab Palestinian people believe this guy, there is no hope. Now is the time for the 99% of decent people who live in Gaza to have their turn to rise up and demand a civilized government that will stop the lunatics from starting a needless bloodbath.

Terrorists Terrorists Terrorists. It's amazing how a word that can be used to harangue those you disagree with rather than to think.

Also, people there is no need to YELL and capitalize letters. If your comment is persuasive, people will hear you. If not, no amount of screaming will work.

You're quite correct, tell Hamas to stop doing it

JULIE-I know it's difficutlt for you to understand, however, you must tell Hamas to stop using their own civilians as Human Shields, Fahti Hammad brags about it, his video is on You tube

I do not believe Hamas,or the Palestinians killed anyone. They would not do anything this close to the vote at the U.N. on Palestinie becoming a member,so my conclusion would be that Mossad pulled a false flag so that they could wipe out the rest of the Palestinians ahead of the vote at the U.N. next month.Hamas does not use their children as human shields, but Israel uses Palestinian children as human shields,as it has been proven by two of them being charged. The punishment was nothing.
