BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- No date has been set for President Mahmoud Abbas' meeting with Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal to discuss national unity, Fatah official Azzam al-Ahmad said Friday.

Al-Ahmad, who heads Fatah's reconciliation delegation, told Ma'an that the meeting would be held after the president's regional tour.

He said Abbas initiated the meeting with Mashaal to implement the reconciliation agreement signed in Cairo in May to end years of bitter rivalry between Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, and Abbas' Fatah party, which heads the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.

The president also hoped to discuss Palestine's future with Mashaal, who leads the Hamas movement from exile in Damascus.

Abbas left for Cairo on Friday to meet with Egypt's military ruler Hussein Tantawi, head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.

The meeting is not related to Hamas, al-Ahmad said, adding that the leaders would discuss Abbas' recent application for full UN membership.

Gaza has de facto seceded from Palestine and become a separate breakaway territory. By setting up its own government and army, it has declared UDI. Why should Abbas rush to persuade them back? Hamas wants to dominate the marriage, keep their private army, dictate who the PM is, assume power etc. No state offers a breakaway enclave them apples, why should the PA? Abbas should leave them to stew in Gaza, they will be voted out or overthrown soon enough when the Gazan people tire of their antics.

All sides have been played by Israel enough, since 1960's in a power-ego-struggle that Israel's exploited fully & factions've sucked up.shamefully! But now,if Palestinians want a State/Nation,they must unite as nationals in strength & solidarity!Factional political/ideological bitching is just what Zionist Israel loves & exploits. So,unite as brothers/sisters in national solidarity. The Palestinian National cause is more precious than factional egos/check books. Actual unity, versus empty Zionism.
