GAZA CITY (Ma’an) -- The energy authority in the Gaza Strip on Monday accused Israel of deliberately disconnecting the main electricity grid to the coastal enclave as part of a "punitive policy."

"The Israeli occupation uses security pretexts to justify disconnecting a grid which provides 14 megawatts to the northern Gaza Strip," head of the energy authority Kanaan Ubeid said.

He added that electricity had been cut off to the north for nine days.

The current power crisis in Gaza is also being caused by the cold weather, which has seen a surge in energy use, and maintenance works being carried out by Swedish engineers, Ubeid added.

Israel continues to supply the Gaza Strip with water and 70 percent of its electrical power, the rest being supplied by neighboring Egypt or local power plants.

Israel warned on Saturday that it would cut the supply of water and electricity to the Gaza Strip if rival parties Fatah and Hamas formed a unity government.

This is VERY STUPID and DUMB of us to do this. Just like the Palestinian tax revenue transfer freeze, this is backfiring on us like hell and will serve NO PURPOSE other than to cause the Gazan Palestinians needless suffering (and likewise for any water cut-offs). I'm doing the best I can to tell our PM's office, government agencies and Knesset members to CANCEL these policies; they're INSANE and definitely NOT benefiting us.

Yeah Carlos, complaining by posting comments. You're all talk, huffing and puffing. The country of Israel is a friend to the USA. When America is suffering, Palestinian Arabs rejoice. Go complain.

I don't understand why the US or even Israel reject the idea of a Palestinian State. Their infrastructure has be build, Gaza has to find a way to have their water and electricity. But than I start to understand why the US and Israel are rejecting a Palestinian State. What to do with the West Bank. Gaza its easy, it can be a Palestinian State but the West Bank is the problem or Gaza is the problem. Either way both of them cannot be included in a Palestinian State.

#5 lol, keep yapping your ignorance. good thing the true jews in america who actually follow the torah of judaism vehemently denounce anything associated with zionism (which is not a religion) and are thus neither friends of israel nor any other zionist anywhere, quite the contrary as a matter of FACT. i'm with Carlos.

7 - this is a problem, it is impossible to live peacefully in one state with palestinians. That is why British Mandate Palestine was partitioned. And unfortunately, there is no single democratic arab state on the face of Earth. It is hard to believe that Palestine would be the first one. Definitely would not be if Hamas is involved.
