GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Tens of thousands of Hamas supporters rallied in Gaza City on Wednesday to celebrate the movement's 24th anniversary.

Hamas commemorated the anniversary under the slogan: "Free people living up to their promises: Oh Jerusalem, we are coming."

Supporters gathered in al-Katiba Square, where a stage was erected, shaped like a vessel carrying a 6-meter tall and 16-meter long replica of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Hamas' green flags were hoisted along the main roads of the city, where traffic ground to a halt as thousands headed to the festival.

Police deployed around the city to manage the crowds of supporters, which Hamas officials said numbered 350,000.

Addressing the rally, Hamas's Gaza leader Ismail Haniyeh vowed to continue resisting Israel's occupation.

"Resistance is the way and it is the strategic choice to liberate Palestine from the (Jordan) river to the (Mediterranean) sea and to remove the invaders from the blessed land of Palestine," Haniyeh told the crowd, which chanted: "We will never recognize Israel."

The rally was punctuated by sonic booms from Israeli warplanes overhead, familiar sounds in the Gaza Strip, where militants frequently fire rockets into Israel and Israeli aircraft carry out raids.

"Hamas, together with other stubborn resistance factions, will lead the people towards uprising after uprising until all of Palestine is liberated," Haniyeh said, referring to territory that includes the occupied West Bank and what is now Israel.

Hamas is regarded by the West as a terrorist group for its refusal to recognize Israel, renounce violence and accept existing interim Israeli-Palestinian peace deals.

The group has said it might agree to a long-term truce with Israel in return for the creation of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

The armed wing of Hamas, meanwhile, announced figures detailing its resistance against Israel. It has fired 11,093 rockets at Israel and killed 1,365 Israeli soldiers since Hamas was formed in 1987, it says.

In a report marking the anniversary, the al-Qassam Brigades said 6,411 Israeli soldiers had been injured in the group's 1,117 military operations and claimed to have arrested 24 Israeli soldiers.

Some 1,848 Hamas militants have been killed, the group said.

Let's be honest, at least with ourselves, here on Maan News.

In 1967 we were NOT coming for Jerusalem
( We already had it, both East & West Jerusalem ),
and we are NOT coming for Jerusalem today either.

Instead, WE ARE COMING TO DESTROY ISRAEL, AND:
1- Israel knows it,
2- Israel is easily strong enough to resist us,
3- Israel is getting stronger every day, &
4- ISRAEL WILL NOT SURRENDER.

With all this celebration and declaration of goals by Hamas and Gaza Palestinians, it should be abundantly clear why Palestinian "unity" is like a cloud: It's sky-high on the ladder of hope but as solid as thin air. Add to this all this belching barf about "liberation" of land from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River and you have a double portion of Palestinian flatulence.

Tibi, west jerusalem was mostly emptied of Palestinians in 1948. Between 48-49 it was occupied by the newly founded jordanian regime. In case you had forgotten. There is nothing wrong with destroying israel as that is exactly what the foreign zionists did to Palestine, they wiped it off the map and now they play around with words. Foreigners are allowed to destroy palestine but Palestinians dont have the right to destroy the foreign state placed on our land? Give me a break.

Yehuda, by the way, you should be worrying about your own non-existing unity, whether its between white and black jews, white and brown jews, ashkenazi and sephardi, ashkenazi and mizrahi, religious vs secular, atheist vs haredim, gay vs the modesty crew that have invaded occupied yafa that you call tel aviv as well as man vs women.. tell me, are women still not allowed to sit in the front of the bus in occupied jerusalem? and are haredi militias still beating up non-modest women on the street?

ronen, hamas isent trying to take back anything clearly, they are all talk only, hence why they havent even updated their weapon arsenal with anything that could liberate land. However, hamas and the PA loosing does not mean Palestinians are loosing. What you stole, you will loose. You may not see it, but many of your officials are. In the mean time, I suggest you read about the ashkenazi and zionist connection to the Gog and Magog, perhaps then your confidence will shrink to what it should be.

Keep dreaming, "Abdul Jalil", keep dreaming. Why did you abandoned your brothers and sisters to live in the Land of the Great Satan? If you stayed in UN refugee camps, then all your needs would have been met by American and European taxpayers. Your university tuition and fees would also be paid. Same benefits would be given to your dozen children and dozens of grandchildren and dozens of great-grandchildren, and etc. etc. Just keep polishing those old door keys from 1948...
