Since this story was published evidence has emerged casting doubt on the timing of an infant's death which was reported by Hamas' Al-Aqsa TV and confirmed by a Gaza medical official. The same health official now says the boy died in early March, not Friday as originally reported.

An updated account of the incident was published Monday. The original story is below.

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- A seven-month-old baby in Gaza died on Friday evening after medical equipment he was connected to switched off as a result of a power cut, a Hamas-affiliated TV channel said.

Gaza medical spokesman Adham Abu Salmiya confirmed the incident, adding that the infant was born with respiratory problems and doctors had recommended the use of mechanical breathing apparatus to be used at home.

The father of the child had turned on the apparatus before going to sleep but during the night a power cut caused it to switch off, resulting in the infant's death, Hamas' Al-Aqsa TV reported.

The child was the "first victim of the current power crisis in Gaza," Abu Salmiya said, warning that the medical sector in the coastal enclave is in jeopardy.

Recent fuel shortages have had a catastrophic effect on daily life in the Gaza Strip, with people facing daily power cuts of up to 18 hours a day.

"first victim of the current power crisis in Gaza"??
More like ANOTHER CHILD VICTIM OF ISRAEL'S ILLEGAL BLOCKADE & collective punishment of non-Jews,for VOTING DEMOCRATICALLY,in their last election, for refusing to leave their native land & resisting the ILLEGAL ISRAELI OCCUPATION.This isn't a seasonal "power crisis in Gaza". It's more symptoms of Israel's 65 yrs of WAR CRIMES & INFANTICIDE of non-Jewish children! Zionism is EVIL!

This baby is a victim of the feudal war between Hamas and Fatah. Both of these gangs are directly responsible for the despair and misery inflicted on the Palestinisn people! This calls for a revolution in 2012.

Mel (2). How accurately have you hit the mail on the head!! WAR CRIMES is exactly what I have been thinking for some time and it shames governments around the world that these words have not been used before.

#2: Your shouted nonsense is idiotic and rooted in Neo Nazi propaganda. If the cowardly Ham-ass leadership focused on bringing in fuel and medical supplies instead of importing rockets, and instead of blowing up power lines and fuel pipelines, this would not happen. The Ham-ass crime bosses are using their people as cannon meat and this has to stop.

@Salim. You are talking "nonsense". It's easy to pick the "Neo Nazi propaganda" card against someone who is criticising the Israeli occupation and siege. You have no idea what it's like here! Mel/ USA is right. This is not the first victim. Many patients have died and many more will die here because they are not allowed to travel for treatment, including children!

To southparkbear #1 'let hamass and egypt continue their fight who is 2 blame' Israel insists on asserting her sovereignty over Gaza. Therefore, she is the sovereign power. Therefore, she is to blame.

WOW - You Are An Amazing Woman. Now if only some of the Arab Men/leaders could accept responsibility, for both causing the problem, and also compromising to resolve it, rather than just blaming the Jews, we could finally create Palestine !!

Even the people of Gaza blame their own government (HAMAS) for the fuel shortage - http://www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=470721

Another child killed by the Israeli Occupation in her illegal Blockade of Gaza, they might as well have shot the baby point blank in the head with a gun. How many children will Israel kill in her quest to free the land of all nonJews? This racism/prejudice/hate expressed through the killing of children, there is not anything lower than this. We see where evil takes a nation in full display every single day of this inhumane Occupation in Israel's actions against children in Gaza.

Hamas REFUSES Israel electricity!!! You CAN'T blame Israel for this one, even though you will

Read her and weep, Mel and Colin and Sherri and the rest of you. Hamas refuses to take energy via Israel. Egypt refuses to take the Gaza headache upon itself and continues its blockade of Gaza. Yes, Dorothy, there is an Egyptian blockade of Gaza - deal with it! Brian Cohen

To Nour, Israel occupies Gaza, thus they owe obligations to the civilian population to see their basic needs are met, and that includes having electricity, that does such things as sustain life for premature babies in incubators. All Israel needs to do to be relieved of this obligation owed to civilians in the OPT is withdraw completely from all occupied lands and dnd their illegal Blockade of Gaza that is collective punishment and a war crime, under the Fourth Geneva Convention.

Sherri Munnerlyn, Israel doesn't occupy Gaza. There is no single Israeli soldier in Gaza. Regarding blockade (which is not the same as occupation, by the way) - Israel doesn't restrict sending fuel or food into Gaza; Hamas government doesn't want (for political reasons) to accept fuel through Israeli border crossing and prefer fuel from Egypt. But it's not Israeli problem; it's problem of Hamas. Palestinians stop blaming Israel for their own problems.

18 ) Arnold / Canada
25/03/2012 23:18
A few points to ponder. First. Hamas refuses to allow fuel into Gaza via the Israeli crossing. Second. Hamas blaming Egypt for the lack of fuel blaming it on pressure from Egypt for Hamas to make friends with Fatah. Third. The parents went to bed and did not bother to set an alarm to make sure the generator was working through the night. Blame Israel ? Laughable again because Arabs do nothing wrong. Anything that goes wrong is simply someone else's fault. And Mel / USA laps it all up.

19 ) @ Sherri #16 / USA too
25/03/2012 23:28
"Israel OCCUPIED Gaza in - THE PAST, thus OWED obligations to the civilian population" in - THE PAST, but NOW IN THE PRESENT, ever settler and every soldier has left Gaza (& Area A too), so NOW it is Hamas and the PA that have obligations to the civilian population !!!

20 ) Robby / USA
26/03/2012 04:46
16 ) Sherri Munnerlyn / US - "Israel occupies Gaza" - Really? It is 2012, Israel left Gaza 7 years ago. Maan reported that HAMAS refused fuel from Israel and has also reported that almost half the citizens of Gaza blame HAMAS (as reported by Maan), only a small percentage blame Israel.

Aren't we all the suckers for believing this story that appears to have been faked. I think I'll believe the AP and the Washington Post, who have a lot more credibility: http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle_east/parents-gaza-baby-dies-when-respirator-runs-out-of-fuel-as-power-cuts-deepen/2012/03/25/gIQA12aaZS_story.html

It is so sad when one so young dies, but you are blaming the wrong people,
where "the Associated Press was forced to retract a story" alleging the
death of a Palestinian baby as a direct result of a Gazan fuel crisis,
after discovering a Hamas lie.
