BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The United States said Wednesday it was concerned by efforts to restrict access to the Internet and would raise the issue with the Palestinian Authority.

The Palestinian Authority has instructed service providers to block access to as many as eight opposition news sites, according to Palestinian officials who oppose the decision.

"We have seen these reports, and we are concerned about any uses of technology that would restrict access to information. We are raising these concerns with the Palestinian Authority," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters in Washington.

"You know how strongly we advocate freedom of expression, freedom of information. So we will raise these things and endeavor to figure out what’s going on."

Nuland added: "We’ve had these concerns in other parts of the world, and we wouldn’t want to see the PA going in the direction that some of those regimes have gone in."

She said none of the news sites received funding by the State Department, but did not yet have a "full picture" about US Agency for International Development programs.

Also Wednesday, US President Barack Obama waived restrictions on funding for the Palestinian Authority.

In a memorandum to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Obama said that "it is important to the national security interests of the United States to waive the provisions" blocking aid.

"You are directed to transmit this determination to the Congress, with a report pursuant to section 7040(d) of the Act, and to publish this determination in the Federal Register."

Interesting that Israel's behavior doesn't concern them that much.

#1) Ido.... well said. These US idiots only lecture third world countries or countries who receive aid (Israel excepted). They seem to ignore the fact that their influence around the world has diminished and will continue to do so. Now that no one listens to them so they use threatening actions by stopping humanitarian aid. They are jokers.

#1 and # 2. Why don't you fools analyze why Abbas is curtailing the internet.

Typical pro-Arab comments: "Let's ignore the Arab problem and blame America and Israel." America and Israel are not shutting down freedom of speech for Palestinians. Wake up Ido. Get keen, silly Brit and start reading properly: There is no Arab Spring in "Palestine". Your ignoring the problem gives the two dictators, Abbas and Haniyeh, more power to suppress their own people. But then again, the pro-Palestinian lobby really doesn't care about that.

#3 We Palestinians know why the PA curtails the internet and we are furious about restrictions placed on freedom of speech and freedom of the press. We just don't need the hypocrites in the US telling us about it while they support the worlds latest master race. It would be like Hitler telling orthodox Jews that they shouldn't throw rocks at cars in Jerusalem on Saturday. Get it now?

#5 Your analogy doesn't work unless Hitler was funding the orthodox Jews in Jerusalem. The US is funding the PA. That's the difference.

#6 Ah, but Hitler did pay for the food given to concentration camp inmates. Maybe they should have had more respect for him and been thankful.

LOL! US state dept, especially with Victoria Nuland, doesn't speak circumstantial truths. They follow an AGENDA set down on paper,in 1997,by Nuland's husband Robert Kagan &William Kristol et al,who planned invasion/regime-change in Iraq LONG before 9/11. http://maidhcocathail.wordpress.com/
PNAC's co-founder Robert Kagan(Victoria's spouse)reformed PNAC into the FPI: http://www.foreignpolicyi.org/about
-where the sole agenda is the CONTAINMENT of Russia/China VIA Syria/Iran(Eurasian corridor).
