UN's Ban urges Israel to charge prisoners or free them
Published Thursday 10/05/2012 (updated) 10/05/2012 22:47
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday urged Israel to either charge or release Palestinian detainees "without delay."

Ban expressed concern for Palestinian prisoners on hunger strike in protest over their detention without charge and stressed "the importance of averting any further deterioration in their condition," in a statement issued through his spokesman Martin Nesirky.

"(Ban) reiterates that those detained must be charged and face trial with judicial guarantees, or released without delay," the statement added.

Thaer Halahla, 33, and Bilal Diab, 27, have been on hunger strike in Israel jail for 72 days. Neither has been charged or tried for any offense.

On Monday, Israel's Supreme Court rejected appeals against their administrative detention.

Physicians for Human Rights - Israel said Diab was transferred from hospital to a prison clinic on Tuesday.

"The (Israeli Prison Service) clinic is not adequate both ethically and professionally to treat hunger strikers. For a life saving resolution to have a chance, hunger strikers must be hospitalized," PHR-I said in a statement.

The International Committee of the Red Cross warned Tuesday that Diab, Halahla and four others on hunger strike were in "imminent danger of dying" and called on Israel to transfer them to hospital and allow visits from their families.

Thousands of Palestinian detainees are refusing food to protest Israeli policies, including detention without charge, denial of family visits and solitary confinement.

On Wednesday, protesters blocked the entrance to the UN office in Ramallah slamming the world body for its failure to intervene to save the hunger strikers.

A group of youth activists called Palestinians for Dignity sent a letter to Ban Ki-moon on Monday, urging him to take a "firm and vocal position in opposition to Israel’s abuse and violation of Palestinian prisoners' rights."

The letter added: "We note with disappointment your silence ever since this protest movement began in December 2011 with Khader Adnan’s arbitrary arrest and subsequent hunger strike."

"This stands in stark contrast to your vocal and persistent remarks in support of formerly incarcerated Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit."

To maintain a state of terror among the subject population, Israel needs to retain the ability to arrest anyone, at any time, without giving a reason, and keep them for as long as it pleases. One needs to look at this from the Zionist point of view. The rule of law can't be allowed to hamstring their exercise of power.

Dozens are dying in Syria every day, and THIS is the problem that concerns UN Secretary-General Ban? The man needs a reality check.

Prisoners are barely even an internal matter, but nuclear weapons are clearly a global issue, particularly when in the hands of a nations, calling for another's destruction, so Israel urges Ban to get the "Big Picture", and charge Iran with Nuclear weapon ambition, without delay !!!

Oh, wow, one stops her strike in the Ukraine (Tymoshenko) so he finally notices over 3,000 in Palestine. A bit like the one Gilad Shalit who warranted his undivided attention and personal visits to his family, and the ~4,800 Palestinian prisoners, whose families he refused to meet. The only surprise to me is that he has said anything at all.

Colin: you're joking, right? I certainly hope so. And that what Israel does: terrorise the Palestinians. outlier: Syria has nothing to do with Palestinians in administrative detention. Tobias: Iran doesn't have nuclear weapons and has never called for the destruction of Israel. Israel has nuclear weapons and constantly threatens to bomb Iran. Bemused: Like outlier regarding Syria, Ukraine has nothing to do with Palestinians in administrative detention. Typical whataboutery.

#5) Mark/Ireland...... agree with every thing you say. Confirms that all those you mention in your feedback are Israeli backers or infact jews themselves. Not that I have anything against Jews, but the right wing jews are runining reputation of decent jews/ Israeli's. Perhaps they need to experience Israeli brutality and then we should ask their views. They are bunch of jokers. lol

When will the world take notice of States that disregard the obligations of legal representation and trial in a court of law that acts within the framework of U.N. legislation? When will the state of Israel act lawfully and abide by the rules they are signatory of? Criticism of Israel is not anti-Semitic – the Palestinians have rights too.
