BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas will demand the release of 123 long-term prisoners before agreeing to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, PLO negotiator Saeb Erekat said Friday.

Abbas wants Israel to free 123 prisoners detained before the signing of the Oslo Accords in 1993, Erekat told Ma'an.

Erekat also said Abbas may meet with Israel's deputy prime minister Shaul Mofaz although no date has been set.

On Thursday, Mofaz called on for the immediate renewal of peace talks between Abbas and Netanyahu, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported.

Meanwhile, Fatah official Nabil Shaath said the Palestinian Authority did not have faith in the Israeli government to follow through with its declarations.

Israel can not even implement court orders to remove an illegal outpost by the Beit El settlement near Ramallah, let alone resolve the issue of settlements in its entirety, he told Ma'an.

Yasser Abed Rabbo, secretary-general of Fatah's executive council, said Thursday that Palestinian officials were wary of maintaining the status-quo with Israel at the expense of progress.

"What we're afraid of is that this process exists to contain any crisis that may occur and not to push the political process forward," Abed Rabbo told Voice of Palestine radio.

Abbass should be exiled immediately for failing to demand the release of hunger strikers, particularly those in imminent danger of death, failing to demand a lift of the siege on gaza, failing to demand izraeli compliance with international law and for failing to uphold his demand that there will be no talks until izrael freezes all settlements. what a corrupt little wimp he is.

President Abbas needed to learn how to play nicely when he was a child, and now unfortunately it seems that he is too old to learn any new tricks:
- President Abbas wants many things from Prime Minister Netanyahu
( prisoners, borders, Jerusalem, refugees, etc.), but all his demands will continue being ignored, just as he scontinue ignoring what
- Prime Minister Netanyahu wants, A Negotiated Peace/Statehood Deal !!!

how can abbas "demand" a release of someone convicted of murder or attempted murder? at most he can ask the use of the word demand seems laughable to me

You are right.
"Abbass should be exiled immediately for failing to" keep his Oslo promises,
AND all the rest of the PLO, that were allowed to return from Tunisia,
as a result of the Oslo Accords, should be put of the same boat with him !!!

Israel can live with the status quo. They have a great excuse in that the PA keeps putting up barriers to talk about the real issues. Therefore they can wait until Abbas is ready to just talk. And history has proven that talking with Israel yields peace and that Israel is willing to give up land, like Sinai to Egypt or Gaza to Palestinians. It is up to the Pals to show they're serious about peace.
