Official: Abbas-Mofaz meeting postponed indefinitely

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Sunday's meeting between President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli vice premier Shaol Mofaz has been postponed indefinitely, an official said Saturday.

The senior Fatah official, who asked not to be named, told Ma'an the meeting was postponed for several reasons including public opposition under the current circumstances.

The official applauded Abbas “for showing respect to the people’s position,” which he said was their right.

"The whole world should consider the huge pressure internally and externally President Abu Mazen (Abbas) faces in light of Israel’s stubbornness and the ongoing settlement activities, detentions, and house demolitions," the official said.

Palestinians reacted overwhelmingly negatively Thursday and Friday after news of the expected meeting between Abbas and the Israeli vice premier, taking to Facebook to denounce the visit.

The leaders were to meet Sunday in Ramallah, but Palestinian youths began preparations to hold protests and some even called on the Palestinian Authority to arrest the official upon arrival.

Mofaz told reporters this month that he intended to meet Abbas "to examine ways to restart peace negotiations with the Palestinians".

Mofaz, head of Israel's centrist Kadima party, joined Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition in May to form one of the biggest coalitions in Israeli history, a move that commentators said could give Netanyahu a freer hand to seek peace with the Palestinians.

Negotiations between Israel and the PLO broke down in late 2010 after Netanyahu refused to extend a partial freeze on illegal settlement building on occupied Palestinian land.

The PLO has demanded a halt to the construction before talks resume, but Israel says the settlements issue should be resolved in negotiations.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Amazing !!!! So to the Palestinians, it is unacceptable to even sit down and talk about ways to restart negotiations!!!! This action, among many others should only serve to solidify world opinion as to the true desire of he Palestinians with respect to obtaining a peace agreement and an Arab state.

Would Mofas want to talk/shake the hand of a Nazi criminal? I don't think so. Israel would quickly capture him and imprison him for the rest of his life for treason.

this is as promising as unity talks. We may need very soon to split area C into C and D and have D under israeli control

3 ) Ahmad / Ramallah - Good point, this doesn't look like very good journalism, it doesn't state what "overwhelmingly negatively" means.

Losers with their loser mentality. If there ever is a "Palestine" it will never be able to stand on its own feet, but will be the child welfare state that the world will pay for for centuries to come. What a waste of good money on a people whose dictators can't even decide who the real dictators are. Fatah or Hamas? Let's solve half the problem and have Gaza declare independence. Nobody will object. The west bank? As we say: oy vay.

12 ) FROM TALKS / TO NEGOTIATIONS
01/07/2012 04:51
Fatah says "the Abbas-Mofaz meeting is postponed indefinitely", and Israel says "Fine, & Creating Palestine is postponed indefinitely too," !! unless Fatah can possibly meet somewhere else, and unless Fatah can move, FROM TALKS TO NEGOTIATIONS, without having their demands achieved from the start !!!

#11, unfortunately you're right. "the world will pay for centuries to come" because Israel who is llegally obligated to pay the cost of the on-going occupation under international laws is not doing so. Is USAID building roads to helps Palestinians? No. USAID is building roads to avoid causing a burden on the Israeli economy. After all, national interests...special relationships...so on and such...(insert rhetoric here). The occupation will end when zionists feel it in their wallets.

1- About 99% of the Palestinians live in Areas A/B & Gaza, where their PA-Hamas governments have sovereignty, and UNESCO says "Palestine" is a state, so THE OCCUPATION IS OVER, and "Israel's legal obligations" are all but 1% complete, and 2- Now the sovereign PA-Hamas governments, in Areas A/B & Gaza, and the other Arab governments that invaded have 99% of the obligation to provide a future for Palestinians, and if they want Israeli cooperation, they will have to negotiate for it !!!

All dudes here: it was bibi who did that: read the article: Netanyahu torpedoed Abbas-Mofaz meeting, claim sources close to vice PM- now everyone who wrote poor propaganda about Pals correct your posts: lets start with: Brian Cohen / Israel and with his: Losers with their loser mentality...go on man...go on!!!

Since a Palestinian state can ONLY be created through meetings,
talks, negotiations, and peace/statehood agreements with Israel,
- POSTPONING TALKS INDEFINITELY IS THE SAME AS
- POSTPONING A PALESTINIAN STATE INDEFINITELY.

It could be that bibi did NOT want a rival leader to get credit for peace,
but Bibi has been trying to restart peace talks, though NOT on PA's terms,
and bibi could NOT "torpedoe" or prevent Mofaz from attending the meeting,
so THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE THREAT OF AN INTIFADA,
AGAINST THEIR OWN GOVERNMENT 'TORPEDOED" THE MEETING.
