Arafat sister: Don't exhume late leader's body

GAZA CITY (Ma’an) -- A sister of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is not among those, including his widow, calling for the Palestinian Authority to exhume the body in the wake new questions about his death.

"Leave him to rest in his soil,” Khadija Arafat said Thursday, saying she has been overwhelmed with media inquiries following an Al Jazeera investigation that raised the possibility Arafat was poisoned.

"Would exhuming his body bring him back to life?" she said. "Let him be comfortable where he's lying ... To satisfy my conscious and my brother in his grave, let's not talk about exhuming his body."

Meanwhile medical files released for the first time portray Arafat as healthy a month before he died, The Associated Press reported, citing treatment notes by Arafat’s doctors who cared for him in Ramallah. The report confirmed the records originally published by Al Jazeera.

Earlier, the head of a medical committee investigating Arafat's death said the late president died from poisoning, but could not confirm the use of a radioactive element called polonium.

Abdullah Al-Basheer, a doctor in Jordan, made the comments during a news conference in Ramallah. While not being able to confirm the use of polonium, the element can still not be excluded from current investigations, he told reporters.

Allegations of foul play have long surrounded Arafat's demise in November 2004 after French doctors who treated him in his final days said they could not establish the cause of death.

French medical reports are incomplete, al-Basheer said, adding that a French hospital has refused to provide his medical commission with adequate information to aid its inquiry.

The controversy surrounding Arafat's death was reignited by an Al Jazeera expose last week in which the Swiss Radiophysics Institute said it found "surprisingly" high levels of polonium-210 on Arafat's clothing - the same substance used to kill former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006.

The Swiss institute said, however, that the symptoms described in the Palestinian president's medical reports were not consistent with the radioactive agent.

The Palestinian Authority has agreed to exhume his body from Ramallah to complete investigations, but has yet to set a date to carry it out.

Allegations of foul play - and of Palestinian involvement in it - have long marked factional fighting among Palestinians.

In 2004 Arafat's death was blamed on Mossad poisoning him. Therefore does it matter if it was by conventional poisoning or by this radioactive poison now being bandied about ? The Palestinians believed it was Mossad and they rioted and some probably got killed for their efforts. What will this bring forward ? More riotting. More dead Palestinians. Look inward people. Arrest the butler, the chef, and the body guards to get to the truth.

There is a history of Israel recruiting Palestinian collaborators by intimidation and blackmail...It's what Israel has always done and it's what have betrayed the Palestinians since '48....
However, it's no longer the Palestinian collaborator or the collaborations that are important...What's important is that 'nuclear poison' was administered.
It's not rocket science to realize Palestinians would not have access to nuclear poisons...

Now please post this comment.

No it is not "rocket science", it is physics. Polonium has a half life of 138 days. I trust you are not involved in rocket science or physics, and hopefully do not have to use heavy machinery either.

You have no idea what rocket science I do know, but from your remark alone you're a Jew who knows what 'others' are thinking, planing and building.
The Polonium discovered was enough to put Israel on the defensive and bring you out of the woodwork...Maybe it wasn't Polonium at all, but another Israeli gift that will prove even more interesting..

4 ) Edithann / USA - Please read this ... http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/11/29/polonium_available_online/ It's not rocket science, but Arafat must have been surrounded by confidants, if he was murdered that would be the first place too look. Or you can just take the easy way out and convict the Israelis with not proof.

Please read my first sentence #1)!

Why so defensive and vociferous about polonium? Has the thought of Arafats' exhumation become a problem for Israel? What are you all afraid of, so it might not be polonium so what? It's obvious it's something and not the Israeli party line..

The historic culture of Sayanims and assassins, means Israel is more then suspect. Arafat stood between Israels complete theft of Palestine and had to be removed to make room for Abbas.

6 ) Eithann / USA - Please show me where I said anything about whether they should exhume the body or not. Just today Maan again reported another Palestinian official accused other Palestinians of killing Arafat. I guess you and I both agree, you will take the easy way out and blame the Israeli's even before their is proof.

Well, that is what we all do, isn't it? We blame Israel because Arafat had no other enemies right? and because if something bad happens it's always the fault of the Jews, right? Newsflash: Arafat DID have other enemies. SOME of them were well connected. It is not inconceivable that a political enemy of Arafat's WHO IS/WAS PALESTINIAN (or another national other than Jewish/Israeli) *MIGHT* have poisoned him to "remove an obstacle" to their own political objectives?

It wasn't till Wiki-leaks spilled the beans that Abbas always working with Israel..It was then he finally went to the UN and Eraket was running for his life..They've always worked for Israel and I wouldn't be surprised if they were responsible for Arafat's death..Didn't Arafat fire Abbas before he died?
I guess the Palestinians are getting restless..so Abbas is throwing them the UN bone again...

This is an old thread already...so either print it or dump it!
