JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told Israeli officials during her visit to the country on Monday that the new Egyptian president had promised her he would not end the closure of the Gaza Strip, an Israeli news site said.

Clinton secured a promise from Muhammad Mursi, Egypt's first Islamist president, that it would not fully open the Rafah crossing into the Gaza Strip, the sole entry and exit point not controlled by Israel, Israel's Inyan Merkazi ('Central Issues') news site said.

Israel maintains a land, sea and air blockade on the Gaza Strip, tightened five years ago when Hamas took control of the coastal enclave.

Quoting unnamed Israeli sources, the site said Clinton reassured Israeli officials that Mursi will respect the 1979 peace deal between Israel and Egypt, and intends to request some amendments to its terms.

The new Egyptian president wants to deploy more Egyptian security forces to the Sinai peninsula which borders Israel, currently restricted under the Camp David agreement.

Officials in the Gaza Strip have expressed optimism that Mursi, whose Muslim Brotherhood party is close to Gaza rulers Hamas, would break a hole in the blockade by fully opening the Rafah border.

It was shut in 2006 under Israel and Egypt's blockade of the enclave, but reopened in May 2011, three months after former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was ousted by massive street protests against his rule.

Israel and the USA probably already doubt Egypt will keep it's promises,
since it already is NOT keeping others, by passively allowing Sinai terror,
and Egypt will see real consequences, if it continues breaking promises !!

"Hamas took control of the coastal enclave." after the free and fair Palestinian election, won by Hamas, was declared unacceptable by Israel and the USA. What possible reason dd Mme Clinton give for this disgraceful cruel move?

Israel & US have no right in keeping Gaza closured. It is Israel who is being the bad guys & starting problems, always attacking Gaza, & bombed on the Sinai already killed Egyptians recent months. Gas pipeline to Israel needs to be disrupted again it seems. Israel should see real consequences for their inhumane Zionist practices in the region. And it is Israel who is not abiding & honoring so called 'peace treaty' when it constantly attacks Gaza or even encroaches towards it & prevent shiping.

I think the opposite: Gaza Strip under Egyptian government and administration and UN military all along that border should be negotiated, together with the creation of a Palestinian State under Palestinian Authority, as to assure peace in the region in the long run.

He probably thinks that by selling out the people of Gaza, that this will allow him to keep the Sinai, but it will probably be short term..

Hillary should be proud of herself keeping people from making a living. She is a sleaze bag. I did not call her a sleazy human being because I dont think she qualifies as a human being because humans would not do that to other humans. Very sad story if this is true. It may only be until scaf tyranny is over.

'Israel' told the world it was laying siege to Gaza to collectively punish all Palestinians for the capture of Shalit. Well they have him back, but are doing nothing to lift the inhumane blockade of over 1.5 million innocents.

Why on earth does the US encourage the siege, for that is what it is, of Gaza? Why should the people of Gaza suffer a collective punishment? The US should be ashamed.

Not unexpected that Clinton makes such a claim, however, other news reports say that Mursi has stated his intention to open the border between Egypt and Gaza. Who do we believe? Neither of them! Mursi has too much to lose at this time to take such a far reaching step as opening the border, Clinton, on the other hand, is one of that group, like the Israeli establishment who is well accustomed to calling black white without any qualms.

I think this be an examination to Mursi on what line should he proceed? On his principals as he has declared or on his interests. Either or, will determine his true picture. It will not take too long. Gaza people then will find out whether his winning celebration was worthy or not. Not to speak about the Egyptian voters who brought to him to the presidency and the Arab/Muslim people who have supported him. This will have definite consequences. WE JUST HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE.

IT's all about MONEY!! Egypt needs and gets lots of dough from the US and it receives NOTHING from Gaza! So why would it give that up? Sorry Gaza, until you change your attitude towards ISRAEL there will NOT be a country called Palestine.

17 ) @ "Real World" (Fantasy) #5 / Self Defense
23/07/2012 02:02
1- Israel has every "right in keeping the Gaza closure", due to Hamas maintaining it's State of War, which makes it self defense, and 2- Israel is Never "the bad guys & starting problems, always attacking Gaza, & bombed on the Sinai already killed Egyptians", but instead, - Gaza either attacks Israel directly from Gaza (1,000s of rockets), or Gaza either attacks INdirectly Israel via Egypt (militant infiltrations and terror attacks), which again makes Israel's response self defense !!!!

18 ) @ Celia-8 / Correct & Clueless
23/07/2012 02:11
1- You are Correct that "Gaza Strip should be under Egyptian government", like it was bewteen 1948 & 1967, but 2- You are Clueless too since - "UN has NO military to put all along any border", and - UN peace-keepers could NO more halt the Hamas Government aggressions against Israeli civilians, than Syria Government aggressions against Sryian civilians !!!!

19 ) @ Kate-11 / USA too
23/07/2012 02:20
Correction: 1- "Israel told the world it was" INVADING GAZA TO END THE ROCKET ATTACKS UPON CIVILIANS, and 2- Never, as YOU LIE to "collectively punish all Palestinians," and 3- When the rocket threat was neutralized, and Gilad Shalit could NOT freed, the invasion was ended, and 4- The Blockade remains now solely to LIMIT THE FLOW OF WEAPONS INTO THE HANDS OF TERRORISTS.

20 ) @ Ferdirand-12 / USA
23/07/2012 02:26
"The US does NOT encourage the siege", but accepts: 1- the legality of THE BLOCKADE (per the UN's Law of the Sea), and 2- limiting the flow of weapons to a terrorist regime, that has already targeted civilians 1,000s of times, and uses it's own civilians as "human-shields" is A GOOD THING !!
