RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- Palestinian lawmaker Mustafa Bargouthi joined a coalition of rights groups on Thursday expressing outrage at the European Union's expansion of cooperation with Israel.

At the Association Council's meeting between the EU and Israel in Brussels on Tuesday, the EU agreed to develop its cooperation with Israel offering it 60 new activities in 15 fields, and said it would seek to identify areas for future cooperation.

Bargouthi said the upgrading of bilateral ties was granted in contradiction to the EU's political position criticizing Israel's illegal settlement expansion, occupation and violations of international human rights laws.

Europe's decision will encourage Israel to continue its aggression toward Palestinians and breaches of the Fourth Geneva Convention, the Palestinian National Initiative leader said in a statement.

"This emphasizes the need for a popular and parliamentary movement to pressure European governments to change their policies, as well as to impose a boycott policy on Israel similar to [the boycott of] the apartheid regime in South Africa," he said.

A coalition of 11 prominent Palestinian rights groups also expressed outrage at the EU's decision on Thursday.

"As Palestinian human rights organizations, we are deeply disappointed with the EU’s decision to sideline human rights and humanitarian law when it suits the EU and Israel, and thus oppose the EU’s decision to effectively upgrade its relations with Israel," the Palestinian Council of Human Rights said in a statement.

Noting the EU's recent statements expressing concern that Israeli policies threatened the two-state solution, the rights groups said they waited for Europe's words to turn into action.

The EU's meeting with Israel on Tuesday was, however, "a step backwards."

"Aggravatingly, the Association Council statement comes at a time when Israel is relentless in expanding its illegal settlement enterprise; maintains the continued closure of the Gaza Strip which amounts to collective punishment; continues to revoke residency permits of Palestinians; displaces the Palestinian people, especially those residing in Area C; discriminatorily allocates natural resources, such as land and water; as well as continuing the construction of the Annexation Wall," the rights groups said.

The EU is failing to adhere to its self-commitment to international law and must "make a link between its actions and its verbal and written condemnations," they added.

"Only in the instance that the EU does not allow for Israel to enjoy impunity will Israel be persuaded to comply with all its international legal obligations, including those owed towards the occupied Palestinian people."

How can we critisize the EU when we ourselves, whether the PA's collaboration with Israel or the man on the street who buys Israeli products while marginalizing Palestinian products. We need to help ourselves before we can beg others to help us. Wake up people.

Maybe the EU appreciates Israel's stability, far different from the the would-be Palestine's often unpredictable and sometimes irrational behavior (some reflected in comments included in this story). Live and learn.

The EU clearly realizes that they are backing a winner, by agreeing to develop its cooperation with Israel. Bring on all future cooperation, in Israeli expertise with her cutting edge medicine, science and agriculture.

The PA/PLO really needs to create a Strategic Plan to Free Gaza. And the key to Gaza freedom is relations with Egypt. Full trade and any needed aid through Rafah, bypassing Israel should be the primary strategic goal. The rest of the siege will then fail. A prosperous Gaza that serves as no excuse for Israeli intransigence will pressure Israel beyond anything military action or rockets ever could. West Bank life will improve with a prosperous Gaza.

Now if we're keeping score: Israel at the UN, USA, & EU is: - a real full member state, - a friend of common values and unbreakable bonds, and - a state to develop cooperation in 60 new activities in 15 fields, while "Palestine" at the UN, USA, & EU is: - NOT, - NOT, and - NOT, so PALESTINIANS SHOULD realize that it's time RUSH TO NEGOTIATIONS, before our "stock" loses even more value, or else we could start a 3rd Intifada, but this time Burn and Murder in the EU capitals !!!!!

I already told you guys. With all the recent oil and gas discoveries, Israel is fast becoming 'the bell of the ball'. Your pathetic protests are just farts in the wind. Even your Saudi sugar daddies aren't going to be able to help you this time.

When it comes to Palestinian rights , the EU is all talk . When it comes to Israeli business the EU is all action .

As I've said a million times, I will always endeavor to tell the honest truth regardless of who's right or wrong. So I will say that although I'm naturally glad about this EU decision, looking at this from a PALESTINIAN viewpoint, Mustafa Bargouthi and the Palestinian human rights groups make excellent sense. From THAT angle, they're RIGHT. The EU has consistently championed the Palestinian cause and now (like the U.S. at the U.N.) spits in their face. Our policies in the W. Bank-- (cont.)

which are pro-settlement and which I definitely favor--not only threaten a 2-nation solution (an error ... actually, it would be a 3-nation solution--if a Palestinian nation west of the Jordan River ever happened--and it sure as hell won't--it would result in us plus TWO Palestinian nations: Jordan/Palestine and 1 in the W. Bank) they are designed to destroy such "solution," the Palestinians are JUSTIFIABLY upset. So if the EU would reverse itself, would that change US ??? ... HELL, NO !!!

Seems like whenever Israel succeeds at something the Palestinian response is to complain. Same as when Israel was accepted into the OECD - the Palestinians complained. Maybe it would do the Palestinians better if their leaders would pursue their own success rather than push for Israel's failure.

The only way the Palestinians can end the situation is to negotiate and sign a peace treaty, thereby getting an independent state. Just like the Jews have compromised and are not in all of our homeland, the Pals will also have to compromise. This includes a solution for the refugees that does not send millions of them to Israel. It's going to be a hard, but realistic decision. That's why your leaders make excuses - they aren't ready for a state yet.

Maan I have the read the "comments will be reviewed for appropriate contents" And it seems to me you do not follow your own rules. You allow the most vile statements by anyone towards ISRAEL. You allow ISRAEL to be described as a Nazi regime and you allow even worse then that if it is possible. But you are very protective of Your precious Palestine. You certainly have the right to love your people, but don't lower others to raise yourselves up. What are you afraid of?

What would it take to make people in Ramallah realize that they are irrelevant and there to fulfill a specific purpose? That purpose is to make sure that the Palestinians are kept dormant and compliant. We, the Palestinians, know what needs to be done. Do you, at the helm in Ramallah and Gaza know? Somehow I doubt it.
