BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Jewish Voice for Peace launched an open letter campaign earlier this week to force US presidential candidate Mitt Romney to apologize to the Palestinian people for remarks he made while on tour in the region.

On Monday, JVP representatives delivered over 17,000 signatures to Romney's Boston, Massachusetts office.

JVP was hoping to get 20,000 signatures on their open letter calling for Romney to apologize to the Palestinian people.

"Your statements in Jerusalem regarding the growth of the Palestinian and Israeli economies were inaccurate and misleading," the letter reads.

"Israel's Occupation of Palestinian land makes it impossible for the Palestinian economy to succeed, not 'cultural differences'".

During the Republican candidates' trip to Israel, Romney said cultural differences were the reason behind the discrepancy between the Israeli and Palestinian economies, while also quoting inaccurate date on GDP.

Palestinian officials had also accused Romney of undermining peace prospects by calling Jerusalem "the capital of Israel", ignoring their own claims to the city and most world opinion.

"What this man is doing here is just promoting extremism, violence and hatred, and this is absolutely unacceptable," Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told Reuters.

"Your comments were not a reflection of the values Jews, Americans, and our allies hold dear," JVP's open letter says.

"We call on you to apologize to the Palestinian people for your willful lack of understanding of the facts on the ground and the racist assumptions behind them."

JVP is a human rights group based in the United states.

let this open letter stand as one source of clear evidence for how TRUE jews worldwide, not just in the US, condemn the criminality of zionism. it's the zionists who have hijacked true judaism and are destroying it. zionists are also responsible for increasing anti-semitism worldwide.

JVP is a small splinter group of ultra left wingers, very communist type. Believe me the great majority of Israelies know their jargin is pure crap.

Perhaps the fact that the PA pays millions of dollars every month to the families of terrorists and hundreds of millions more to Gazan workers not to work has something to do with the PA economy being in bad shape. Not that JVP (or Ma'an) will ever mention that....

Sam P -- you know nothing about JVP. Clearly you HOPE it is a "splinter group of ultra left wingers, very communist type," since your attitude reveals you as a right winger -- maybe not ultra, but definitely close-minded. Unfortunately you have an increasing number of fellow compatriots -- and THAT is precisely why JVP is gaining more ground by the day. And will continue to do so.

It is moves like this by reasonable Jewish people that make the hope of peace possible. Unfortunately there is a lot of peer pressure against Jewish people speaking out. Please speak out more because it will never change without your support.

Jewish Voice for Peace is truly a marginal group of leftists and anarchists ho are completely outside of Israeli and worldwide Jewish community. JVP funding is derived from grants from Nordic European states as part of their campaign to attack "right wing settlers" and promote Socialist International goals for Israel. No one pays attention to JVP except Palestinians, Arab media and fringe liberals.

@Alex G: Yours is one of the funiest comments I've read in years. Your assertions are baseless.

LMAO, Alex G. I am a member of JVP and I guarantee you I'm not leftist or anarchist. And what are 'Nordic European states'? Iceland? Norway? Very amusing.

Anyone who knows the work of JVP knows they have neither a capitalists nor communist agenda, and are neither left- nor right-wing. They simply recognize a startlingly obvious truth - that peace can come only when justice is achieved. Nothing could be more consistent with traditional Jewish values than that.

Well done JVP. Those who accuse you of being 'marginal' etc are actually worried by your influence and your campaign. It is time for the US to stop aiding the malign occupation of the West Bank and the cruel seige on Gaza.

Perhaps if Israel wasn't a racist state that spies on us and harbors international criminals, it would be worthy of "special status." Maybe, just maybe, if she treated her indigenous people as equals, we'd find Palestinians themselves telling countries like Iran to back off.
