TEL AVIV, Israel (Ma'an) -- The deputy chief of the US army James Winnefeld is in Israel on a "secret" visit, the Israeli news site Ynet reported.

Discord between the US and Israel on the Iranian issue is on Winnefeld's agenda during his visit, Ynet said.

The low-profile visit follows a warning from US Chief of Staff Martin Dempsey that the US did not want to be "complicit" in an Israeli attack on Iran.

"I don't want to be complicit if they choose to do it," Britain's Guardian newspaper quoted the top US general as saying.

Israel -- thought to be the only country in the Middle East with nuclear weapons -- says the prospect of a nuclear armed Iran would pose a threat to its existence. Tehran denies it is developing weapons and says its nuclear program is peaceful.

With the approach of US elections in November, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for a tougher stance against Iran -- implicitly knocking Obama's emphasis on diplomatic and sanctions pressure to halt Iranian nuclear work.

While Israel would expect US backing if it decided to strike Iran, Dempsey's remarks suggested Washington would not be drawn into a conflict.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Of course, one of Isral's main concerns is that a nuclear armed Iran, or even an Iran with, like Israel, an ambiguous or implied nuclear capability, would slow or halt jewish migration into Isreal, and might even provoke an exodus of Jews back to their lands of origin.

1ce-again, the U.S. is being a fare-weather friend. Maybe, Israel shud' try 'getting-into-bed' with Russia or China. @ least they back their friends 2 the hilt. 1ce Obama is re-elected, (and he will b, given the 'out-of-touch-with-the-common-man' approach of the Republican Party), Israel will face the same 'support' as Mubarak got.

#1:wjm:Agreed!The stats of Israel's Jewish-only'facts on the ground'have stagnated&birth-rate fallen.Or,more to the point the ASHKENAZI(white Eurasian)Jewish stats! After all,Israel was supposed to be a predominantly WHITE Jewish state, where even broader Sephardic(originally 70% of Israel's Jews)are considered lesser Jews,by Ashkenazi racists.USG knows the consequences of shouldering the costly burden of apartheid, racism(akin to Nazism)in Israel.Hence many global Jews refuse 2 live in Ziostan!

@1) Jews cannot go back to their land of origin. That would be Europe, and Europe will not take them.

I hope Winnefield gets to talk to the Breaking the Silence guys. And the Palestinians who have to live side by side with the settler terrorists. And watch the settlers hosing their cars under running water while the Palestinians have their water turned on at certain times of the day only. Can't have the Palestinians wasting "our" water. And watch the settlers burning Palestinians' crops. And rooting up their trees. And setting fire to the mosques. And desecrating their graveyards. Some chance!
