Abbas tells Egypt only 1 Palestinian representative
Published Tuesday 18/09/2012 (updated) 20/09/2012 13:01
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday urged the Egyptians to deal only with one representative of the Palestinian people, either the PLO or the Palestinian Authority.

During a meeting in his office in Ramallah with the Egyptian ambassador, Yasser Othman, Abbas highlighted that “there have been attempts to mess with this decisive issue.”

Abbas' remarks came a day after Hamas Prime Minister in Gaza Ismail Haniyeh and the party chief-in-exile Khaled Mashaal arrived in Cairo for talks with Egyptian officials.

Senior Fatah official Tayyib Abdul-Rahim attended the meeting in which Abbas pointed out to the Egyptian ambassador that any alteration to the representation issue would amount to “disagreement plans and suspicious solutions to the question of Palestine.”

The president updated Othman on the moves PA leaders are taking to obtain UN recognition of a Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, and the future plans after recognition.

The ambassador, for his part, asserted that Egypt would deal only with one representative of the Palestinian people, and would support the Palestinian national project leading to a Palestinian state in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Othman also told Abbas that Egypt would always comply with easing the suffering of the Palestinian people, especially in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Asked by Ma’an about Abbas’ request, Othman said, “I assert that Egypt who exerts efforts to end the state of disagreement will never do anything which harms the Palestinian national project.”

Othman also said there had not been tension in the relations between Egypt and the PA, and the relations are very solid as they are based on mutual respect.

“Protecting Palestinian unity is an unchangeable principle for the Egyptians. There are no crises, and the meeting with president Abu Mazen was part of regular consultations. I confirmed to the president that Egypt will never take any move that might harm Palestinian unity.”

Abbas is at least half-right: There is only 1 Palestinian representative. The other half: It is the government of Jordan/Palestine. So Egyptian Ambassador Othman's plans to focus Egypt's efforts on securing a (second) Palestinian nation west of the Jordan River with eastern Jerusalem as its capital again shows, like hopes for a Palestinian "unity," what a hopeless farce he is believing in. I strongly urge him to stop proving Egypt's diplomatic futility is a laughing stock.

There is NO "question of Palestine,” since it never existed as a real state, nor will it ever exist as a real state, unless the PLO keeps the promises it made at Oslo, and reaches a Negotiated Peace Agreement with Israel, and until then, it seems logical to have representatives from both, Hamastan & Fatahstan.

I ask my Palestinian cousins to spread a wword to Egyptian people: "Boycott US financial assistance to Egypt! Do no become a puppet of US Dollar interests! Urge Egypt to decline acceptance of US billions of dollars about to be sent by executive privileges! SAY NO TO AMERICAN AID TO EGYPT!" On the personal note: I know that you don't like us so please make it known to Egyptian Government to refuse US aid NOW. Many thanks.

My compartiots Abu Mazen showed his irritation with Egypt. Why? Not because Egypt is not changing any Mubarak era dealings with Israel, or easing the siege on Gaza, NO, it's because Egypt is meeting with the leaders of Hamas separately. Saying that ONLY the PLO or the PA represent the Palestinian nation. Do you agree? I most certainly don't. I think ONLY the Palestinian nation represent the Palestinian nation. What do you think? Setting on the fence is very costly. The price? Palestine of course
