BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas has instructed officials to "look for a new president," a Palestinian official told Saudi newspaper al-Watan.

Abbas reportedly made the announcement at a meeting of faction leaders in Ramallah.

"You have 10 days until I come back from the United States, and you must look for a new president," Abbas said, according to an official who was at the meeting.

The official told al-Watan that Abbas was frustrated by the frozen peace process with Israel and the impasse in national reconciliation. The president is also angry over the slogans chanted during recent protests across the West Bank against the rising cost of living, the official said.

While demonstrators initially focused on calls for Abbas' Prime Minister Salam Fayyad to quit, protesters in several cities also demanded the resignation of the president.

At the Ramallah meeting, faction leaders discussed several solutions to public discontent and the economic crisis, including canceling the PA's economic agreement with Israel, the Paris Protocol, and ending the Ramallah government's security coordination with Israel, the official told al-Watan.

However, agreement was reached to focus on the bid to upgrade the status of Palestine to a non-member state at the UN General Assembly, the official said, adding that other options would be discussed later including internal arrangements and elections.

Abbas has threatened to resign several times before.

I'll believe it when I see it. No disrespect intended to him when I say that I hope he and his entire PA officials resign without further delay. They have been a major failure and they need to make the transition to a new, fresh younger generation and I really hope (If he means it) that when he does step down that they could appoint Marwan Barghouti as president which may force the hand off Israel to release him.

Mr President: I understand that you are frustrated from US, ISR, EU regimes & also from HAMAS-ians mercenaries but I suggest not quitting before getting a member in UN General Assembly for Palestine & International Crime Court (ICC) as well in order to sue the Zionist-War-Criminals.

President Abbas should not give the bouncer Liberman what he wants i.e. quit from the post. this will give Liberman an upper hand in that he will become cocky in his attitude because he will think that Pres Abbas did what he wanted him to do. Don;t give the bouncer the satisfaction.

He has got enough, his bank accounts cannot need any more money, Swiss bankers refused to accept any more shekels - this is a main reason why he quits. So, US and EU can stop financial aid to palestinians now.

so......since you can't have it your way, just pick up your toys and go home. Time to move on with the elections....besides, his mandate lapsed in 2009. Additionally, his new villa in Aman is now finished and he's anxious to move in !

He, and the entire PA, may as well "quit", since it can NOT hurt "Palestine", and he will NOT help Palestine either.

Please, quit. Please, read people's mind and quit. You have got enough - yours and your sons numerous bank accounts in Switzerland and Dubai are full of money, you and your sons have multiple villas and houses around Middle East, you damaged peace process enough, you ruined PA - it is time to quit. Long time overdue. Go somewhere and re-read your PhD dissertation about holocaust denying. May be write some memoirs – Eruqat, Ashrawi and Lieberman will read it.

WAS/UK---"appoint Marwan Barghouti as president which may force the hand off Israel to release him"------ is that how it works in Pally land? First you appoint a convicted criminal as president then the judicial administration is required to release the criminal...... You make me laugh !!!!
