RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- A former prisoner who was released in a deal between Hamas and Israel in 2011 tried to set herself on fire in central Ramallah on Thursday, onlookers said.

The woman, Abeer Odeh, 30, tried to set herself on fire in Ramallah's Manara square but was stopped by police a Ma'an correspondent said.

The ex-prisoner was taken to a nearby police station, the reporter said.

Police said Odeh is suffering from a number of health problems and had tried to enter President Mahmoud Abbas' headquarters to recruit his support.

She was not allowed to enter and threatened to set herself on fire in Manara square.

Odeh is the second person to make such a threat in the square since protests erupted over the high cost of living in the West Bank.

In early September a Palestinian man tried to set himself on fire in front of a crowd of protesters.

That incident occurred one day after a man in Hebron tried to set himself on fire and two days after a man died after successfully setting himself on fire in the Gaza Strip.
