JERUSALEM (Reuters) -- Israeli forces shot dead an American man who opened fire in a seaside hotel packed with tourists on Friday, killing one person.

Police and military troops swiftly surrounded the hotel in the Red Sea resort city of Eilat after the man -- a former employee of the hotel -- "grabbed a weapon from a security guard and shot a hotel worker," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

The man barricaded himself in the hotel kitchen, shooting back at law enforcement officers. He was shot dead by members of a military counter-terrorism squad, a military source said.

An Israeli hotel guest, Aviram Sela, said he tried to wrestle the gunman to the ground before he started shooting, as terrified tourists dived for cover behind a sofa in the hotel lobby.

"We saw him beating the guard and grab his weapon and the magazine," Sela told Israeli television, adding that the gunman then took aim at a member of his family.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak told Army Radio the incident "appears to be an internal dispute".

Eilat, on the border with Egypt and Jordan, has been a target of militant attacks in the past, and has come under rocket fire from Egypt's Sinai in the past several months. The city is currently crowded with both foreign tourists and Israelis on a seven-day Jewish religious holiday.

I was watching this story as it developed, and there was this puzzling absence of the word 'terrorism.' Now I know why: it was the killer that was Jewish and the victim that was Palestinian.

Another note. The New York Times version of this concludes as follows: "... Hotel workers and the police told guests to return to their rooms and lock the doors. Once told that it was safe to come out, people emerged “happy, clapping,” another guest, Michal Bouaron, told Israel’s Channel 2. “We won’t let this ruin our day and our vacation,” she added." After all, the victim was only an Arab.

Article a bit coy about the identity of the "American man" so presumably not an Arab, rather an American Jew gone postal sadly (making the last bit about "militant attacks" and "rocket fire" in Eilat completey irrelevant.)

You guys are really sick. This American Jews was shot dead by Jewish Swat Police. Yes sadly an Arab was also killed, but this was a work related rage killing spree, so typical of Americans.
Stop reading nonesense into this article.

Colin Wright #2, you a very sick person. Once it was safe to come out, not only was an Arab worker shot dead by a deranged American Jew, BUT & I repeat, BUT, the American Jewish gunman was shot dead by Jewish Police & this is the reason why the guests were clapping. Its quite normal behaviour after a hostage drama, to clap, thanking the Police for a job well done.
Stop your dis-information Colin & grow up.

To Ian & Colin, we know those Jews, mainly the remnants of the holocaust kicked the colonial Brits asses out of Israel & for this your pride has been dented. Stop your one sided idiotic talkback. Its really time you both moved on.
Peace, shalom, salaam.

I agree with Ian and Colin. Why "terrorism" is not mentioned as usual?????and why the identity of the terrorist and the victim are not indentified????

to southbearer: there too many bad apples. What to do with bad apples?

Paul #2 says: 'Colin Wright #2, you a very sick person...' It's the guests that are figuratively stepping over the dead Arab and saying: 'thank God, now we can get on with our vacation,' and it's me that's the sick person. Okay.

To Paul #7 'Its really time you both moved on.' Speaking for myself, I intend to. Just as soon as the Zionists have moved on and out of Palestine, I'll be moving on as well.

to Ian and Colin: your comments make lots of sense and that's why people who are either naive or who support apartheid get frustrated.

#5 "Yes sadly an Arab was also killed, but this was a work related rage killing spree..." You just can't help yourself: the death of the "Arab" is an afterthought, second billing to the big issue of why the nice Jewish boy snapped, why the program didn't screen for schizophrenics, why no-one at the hotel picked up he was a nut, and what it all means...for Jews and Israel. The Jewish press is full of this...the anxiety of the staff and guests, the future of Oranim etc. etc. That's sickening.

#6 "Its quite normal behaviour after a hostage drama, to clap, thanking the Police for a job well done." My guess is that the guests didn't know at that stage the perp was Jewish so all the anxiety, shock and soul searching reported later hadn't kicked in.

#7 Ya got me. My cover's blown. I'm motivated by dented pride that Jews "kicked the colonial Brits asses out of Israel". Drat. "Its really time you both moved on." Why? It's not over. "Peace, shalom, salaam." Peace to you too.

So let me get this straight...Even thought he's an Israeli-Jewish American (most Jews that emigrated from the United States have dual citizenship), he was labelled as just an "American." So when if he does something great like find the cure for cancer, the Israeli state is proud of having him as one of their own, but if he shoots up a hotel and kills someone, they deny ownership and well...he's just an American.
