JERUSALEM (Reuters) -- Israel on Thursday issued a detailed plan for the building of some 800 new homes on occupied land in the West Bank that is certain to attract further international condemnation of its settlement policies.

A planning committee issued a call for bids from contractors to start building 797 housing units on the western slopes of the urban settlement of Gilo, an area that Israel seized in the 1967 Middle East war and later declared part of Jerusalem.

The annexation has never been recognized internationally.

Palestinians want to create a state in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

But they say Israeli settlement building around the city, such as at Gilo, which is home to 40,000 Israelis and lies between mainly Palestinian East Jerusalem and the West Bank city of Bethlehem, will cripple the viability of any future state.

Some 500,000 settlers live in territory seized in 1967.

Previous Israeli announcements and subsequent settlement building have always drawn worldwide rebukes, including from Israel's main ally, the United States.

Hagit Ofran of the Israeli anti-settler group Peace Now, said construction could begin within a few months.

"The government could stop the process before building begins but is taking advantage of the upcoming elections in order to set facts on the ground and will make the possibility of peace with the Palestinians even harder to achieve," she said.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called elections for Jan. 22.

Actually, announcements about our planned or approved construction in the W. Bank is not news anymore. ALL of the W. Bank is our land despite what the (dead) Oslo Accords say. The Palestinians tell us go to hell but the only reason we haven't formally annexed it is because we are sacrificing our integrity to hell for Palestinian false hopes of believing they will eventually get a (second) Palestinian nation west of that Jordan River. IT WON'T HAPPEN. Again, their nation is the "EAST" bank.

But Gilo is in Palestine. The new (non-member) State of Palestine. Israel can't approve "800 new homes" in Palestine. Like we can't approve "800 new homes" in Indonesia (our muslim neighbour to the north). We can't approve ANYTHING there. It's another country. Like Palestine. This will be interesting. Yalla!

Yehuda, brother, All-h favours the compassionate. You should be kinder to your Canaanite brothers and sisters and all share the Holy Land together. I mean you're all Canaanites originally (well except for Europeans and Khazars and converts) but HaShem doesn't care, He loves you all. Peace.

How about this: I approve 800 homes in Indonesia. There. Did it.

"All is our land" - yes, I guess might makes right. Nice precedent, for a "democratic" country. What to do about the people who, inconveniently, live there but are not part of the nation? Force them out? Kill them all? Go ahead, the job is only half finished #1. You disgust me. Read a book instead.

Since when is occupied territory the sovereign land of the occupier? Just checked the 4th Geneva Convention and nope, it has not been rewritten, it still states that it is PROHIBITED to acquire land by conquest. 4GC is of course a statute of international law and no matter how strident the claims of Israel and Yehuda Solomon, they have no valid basis at all in law. Palestine is not Israel and requisitioning land there to build homes for the occupier's tribe breaks every law in the book.

#6 "ISRAEL IS THE ONLY PLACE / ON EARTH WHERE BUILDING HOMES IS A CRIME" No. There's Indonesia. When Business/Israel (#5) starts building those 800 homes he just approved.

UNTIL NEGOTIATIONS ARE COMPLETED (& afterwards likely too):
1- East Jerusalem is part of Jerusalem, which is the Capital of Israel,
2- Gilo is part of Israel's capital, and NOT a "settlement",
3- PALESTINE, whether as an "observer" or "new non-member" state,
EXISTS ONLY AT THE UNITED NATIONS General Assembly & UNESCO, and
4- just as freely as the PA can approve homes in Ramallah,
Israel CAN approve "800 new homes" in Jerusalem this month,
and every month that follows !!!!

look at this from a practical view point. Say PA asks for an upgrade. as we all know an upgrade request means less and less gift monies. Now those 800 home could right a way provide income to the palestinian people

Do you know why Castille is so called? Castles - around which Christian Spanish settlements moved steadily south. Gilo is built like a fortress and it is. Gilo is never going back to any other state. Ian, I am happy to approve a few homes in Sydney but should that be only for the Aborigines? Not sure the suburban types will like that. At least you keep your sense if humor Ian, don't let the hatred consume it.

#15 "At least you keep your sense if humor Ian, don't let the hatred consume it." But I don't hate anyone, "Business/Israel'...not even those violent, olive-stealing psychos in Nablus, or soldier/sadists who make life hell for Palestinians in Hebron, or people who approve building homes in other people's countries, even they are my brothers.
