RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian citizen of Israel, imprisoned for organizing a Naksa Day protest, will be moved from the criminal section of Shatta jail after he launched a hunger strike last week, a lawyer said Sunday.

Muhammad Kananeh, from Arraba village in the Galilee, started a hunger strike on Oct. 23 to protest his categorization as a criminal.

Kananeh told a lawyer from the Palestinian Prisoners Society that he had been placed in solitary confinement after his refusal to eat and drink water.

He told the lawyer that prison authorities will transfer him in around two weeks.

He was arrested by Israeli authorities for organizing a Naksa day protest in the occupied Golan Heights in June 2011.

Kananeh is a member of Abnaa el-Balad, a group which advocates the return of Palestinian refugees to what is now Israel and an end to the Israeli occupation.
