BEIJING (Reuters) -- China said on Tuesday it supports the Palestinian bid for UN observer status, with a vote on the matter at the United Nations later this month.

China has traditionally had close relations with the Palestinians, but in recent years also has had good ties with Israel, especially in the field of defense.

"China understands, respects and supports the Palestinians' request to enter the United Nations," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a daily briefing.

"China always supports the Palestinian people's just cause of recovering their national and legitimate rights and interests, and will always hold that independent statehood is the lawful right of Palestinian people, and also the basis for a two-state solution."

Washington says it favors eventual statehood for the Palestinians, but wants it to come as a result of negotiations with Israel.

The United States can block full recognition of Palestine as a UN member at the Security Council, where it has a veto, but the 193-nation UN General Assembly can still grant observer status.

US-brokered peace talks have foundered, in part because of continued Jewish settlement-building in the occupied West Bank, according to Palestinians, leaving them no choice but to request recognition without waiting for Israel to agree.

President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday repeated an offer to restart peace talks with Israel after the UN vote.

1 ) Palestine & Israel / Unilaterally

Israel should make two announcements regarding the PLO’s UN Bid:
1- It Neither Demands, Nor Relinquishes, any sovereignty rights over any territory east of the West Bank security barrier, without a comprehensive, negotiated peace/statehood agreement, and
2- It will, in the near future, unilaterally create a Palestinian state on borders of Israel's choosing. if the PA continues refusing to negotiate unconditionally !!

"The arguments for and against the latest Palestinian bid for statehood status at the United Nations come down to which is the faster path to irrelevancy",
where "the PLO is seeking a diplomatic victory to preserve the legitimacy of its affiliated PA in the face of a fiscal crisis and a resurgent Hamas", but
"any success at the UN is likely to trigger punitive measures by Israel and the US that could exacerbate the PLO’s isolation" even faster !!!

Israel has never had and never will have any sovereignty or rights in Palestine.

#1 "Israel should make two announcements..." Nonsensical. 1 - Israel has no "sovereignty rights" over "territory east of the West Bank security barrier" to either "demand" or "relinquish". Israel is a military occupier only. 2 - The PA has said it will return to talks after the UN upgrade, when it can negotiate state to state. The capacity to "unilaterally create a Palestinian state on borders of Israel's choosing" is a) an empty threat, b) perverse in the extreme and something which exists only

# 1 - Read the Likud charter and see who it is who sets out pre-conditions! And for further reading do a bit of research about the unilateral declaration of the state of Israel, the basis upon which the UN granted statehood to Israel (promises of compliance to UN Resolution 194), the almost immediate reneging on that promise by Israel, the many UN resolutions regarding Israel's belligerence, and if you continue with your stupid statements then you are either in denial or completely deluded.

#1 Israel has no rights to any territory within the Green Line, it is occupied and cannot be seized. It is Israel which refuses to negotiate unconditionally - it insists on retaining illegal settlement blocks. It even keeps expanding settlements which it has previously agreed to stop (see Roadmap). Palestinians agreed to peace within the 1967 borders as part of Oslo - but Israel continues to build illegal settlements within the West Bank. Israel is choosing settlements not peace.
