BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Palestine's embassy in Turkey on Thursday urged the international community not to remain bystanders to Israel's "barbaric" attacks on the Gaza Strip.
Israel has killed at least 13 Palestinians since Wednesday in airstrikes, tank and naval shelling on the Gaza Strip.
The Palestinian embassy in Ankara noted that Israel's assassination of Hamas military commander Ahmad al-Jaabari sparked the offensive and broke an Egypt-mediated truce.
Calling for an immediate halt to aggression, the embassy said the operation jeopardized the stability of the region. The UN, Arab League and EU must "shoulder their responsibilities in preserving peace and security," it said.
The embassy added that the offensive could only be seen as "a maneuver for its domestic elections and another means to avert Palestinian aspirations for a non-member state at the United Nations."
