BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The military wing of Islamic Jihad said it fired a Fajr rocket at Tel Aviv on Thursday, as warning sirens sounded in Israel's main city.

"We have widened the range of the battle to reach Tel Aviv and what is coming will be greater," the al-Quds brigades said in a statement.

Minutes earlier, sirens sounded in Tel Aviv and Israel's Army Radio reported a missile strike.

Air raid sirens sounded in Israel's commercial center during the evening rush hour, sending commuters scurrying from buses to seek shelter, and an explosion was heard.

Israel's chief military spokesman said no rocket had struck the city. A security source said it fell into the Mediterranean.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak said militants would be made to pay a price for firing rockets toward Tel Aviv.

"This escalation will exact a price that the other side will have to pay," Barak said in broadcast remarks after the rockets were fired.

He also announced he had ordered the military to enlist more reservists "so that we can prepare for any development". The Israeli armed forces chief spokesman said the military had the green light to call in up to 30,000 reserve troops.

Earlier Thursday, Israel's army said a projectile hit an open area near Rishon Lezion, a city 12 km south of Tel Aviv. The Israeli daily Haaretz said two rockets had landed, but no casualties were reported.

Israeli media reports said the rocket came down near an amusement park in sand dunes on the edge of the city.

Hamas' armed wing the al-Qassam Brigades said it had fired two rockets in the vicinity of Tel Aviv.

Declaration of war

Militant groups in Gaza vowed on Wednesday to respond to Israel's assassination of a top Hamas military commander.

Islamic Jihad said the assassination of Ahmad al-Jaabari was a declaration of war. "Israel has declared war on Gaza and they will bear the responsibility for the consequences," the movement said.

A spokesman for Islamic Jihad's military wing said fighters had received orders to "respond fiercely" to the killing of al-Jaabari. All militant factions in the Gaza Strip are on a state of alert and will retaliate "in hours," Abu Ahmad said.

Israel has killed 15 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip since Wednesday in a series of air raids, naval attacks and tank shelling. Palestinian fighters have fired hundreds of rockets at Israeli military sites and across the border, killing three Israelis on Thursday morning.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Actually the constant rocket fire from gaza was a decleration of war. Israel was stupid for not attacking gaza when the first rocket fired. They were hoping to look the other way so peace could be achieved.
But hamas and others have woken up a sleeping tiger. and unfortunatly the people, on both sides will suffer

Yes, "Islamic Jihad hit Tel Aviv", and Israel hit Gaza City, and
Yes, Israel struck 250 targets in Gaza, and Gaza fired 274 rockets at Israel.
- Isn't that enough for now?
- Haven't enough people already died, for nothing, and
- Shouldn't Hamas finally ACCEPT reality and PEACE,
so this doesn't just keep happening again, and again, and again ??

#1 Your timeline is wrong matt. Things were very quiet. Gazans were placidly accepting the blockade, cheered by the visit of the Qatari Emir. Israel crossed the border and killed two people. Some factional idiot took the bait and retaliated (hurting no-one). Israel escalated with tanks and killed some children. Hamas responded (hurting no-one). And so on. Egypt brokered al-hudna (a lull) and things were quiet again...then Israel assassinated Ahmad al-Jaabari may his soul rest in perfect peace

#3 "Isn't that enough for now? Haven't enough people already died, for nothing, and Shouldn't Hamas finally ACCEPT reality and PEACE, so this doesn't just keep happening again, and again, and again ??" I agree with Tibi / Tubas (even though I'm pretty sure he's not real.)

israel started the tit for tat going on. I have to hand it to Hamas they are acting proportionately to israel's consistent escalations. israel is truely a terrorist because it is targeting civilians. The propoganda comments can say Hamas locates in civilian areas but that is not true there is nowhere else to locate. israel purposefully increases collateral damage because they are the devil. israel is pure evil.

If this is true it is bad news for Gazans.

#1 "But hamas and others have woken up a sleeping tiger..." Just noticed how funny that is. Israel isn't "a sleepng tiger". It's been a wide awake, out-and-out, in-your-face, incorrigible bastard for decades. Hardly a shrinking violet. "...and unfortunatly the people, on both sides will suffer" That bit's true, in the usual 100:1 ratio against the Palestinians.

yes the rockets could have been fired (first) by the palestinians... but what about israel's offense for the past 60 years?

TO all the people who say israel is fighting dissproportiantly.
If a mosquito is biting you, do you not slap it with your hand?? besides you are right hamas was agreeing to the ceasefire, but islamic jihad said no to it before al jabari was even gonna sign

#13 "TO all the people who say israel is fighting dissproportiantly. If a mosquito is biting you, do you not slap it with your hand??" Do you MEAN that to be offensive matt, or is that your little joke? Killing something because it gave you an annoying little prick is a PERFECT analogy for the Hamas/Israel dynamic. Come to think of it, "annoying little prick" isn't bad for someone willing to compare the savagery of Israel's murderous assault on Gaza to swatting mosquitoes. No offence.

#13 "...besides you are right hamas was agreeing to the ceasefire, but islamic jihad said no to it before al jabari was even gonna sign" Yeah, they've got some problems with the lunatic factions over there but targetting the SANE guy, with a ceasefire deal in his pocket, is pretty revealing of Israel's real intentions.
