BRUSSELS (Reuters) -- European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said on Friday she was deeply concerned at violence in Israel and Gaza, calling for rocket attacks by Hamas to end and urging Israel to ensure its response was proportionate.

"I am deeply concerned at the escalating violence in Israel and the Gaza Strip and deplore the loss of civilian lives on both sides," Ashton said in a statement.

"The rocket attacks by Hamas and other factions in Gaza which began this current crisis are totally unacceptable for any government and must stop," she said.

"Israel has the right to protect its population from these kinds of attacks. I urge Israel to ensure that its response is proportionate," she said.

Ashton said she had spoken about the situation to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Egyptian president's office, as well as UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

She said she hoped a visit by Egyptian Prime Minister Hisham Kandil to Gaza on Friday would help to calm the situation.

You only have yourselves to blame for this. If you had not rejected my peace plan, we could be celebrating with fireworks instead of dropping bombs and firing missiles.

First Obama, then Hague, followed by Merkel and now Ashton, all echoing almost word for word, the memo from Aipac. What a load of parrots!! Scared sh--less of the US and Israel. BTW - I agree with shirley/australia - what does Abbas have to say about innocent Palestinian civilians being bombed to death yet again? Where the hell is he??

Ms. Ashton has an anti-Israel bias, and if there was any way to be on the right side of international law, and condemn Israel, she would as before, but:
- Gaza's militants brags about attacking civilians in cities (War Crimes),
- Gaza's militants continuing civilians as human-shields (War Crimes), while
- Israel is attacking militants engaging in these War Crimes (Self-Defense) !!!

#9 - Anonymous / USA. The only incidents of the use of human shields, as I recall, were IOF soldiers during cast lead. (War crime) If Israel is attacking militants in 'self-defence', how come so many innocent civilians are dead, and 100s injured. IOF have been targetting 'militants' homes at a time when families are home eating, killing the wives and children of those so-called 'militants.' Self-defence? No - War crime. Expand your reading sources past Jpost & Fox and stop spinning propaganda.

$# 9 - and don't forget the kid playing soccer outside his home. No human shield there. HE WAS OUTSIDE HIS OWN HOME WITH NOT A MILITANT IN SIGHT. Rea the Goldstone Report - even after he did his backdown following Israeli pressure he still named the IDF as using Palestinian children as human shields. And we saw photos of them doing this!!! (Or did you miss those?)
