GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Palestinian resistance fighters publicly executed a man accused of providing intelligence to the Israeli army on a Gaza City street on Friday.

The body of the suspected collaborator was taken to Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. A note was attached to his body claiming he confessed to participating in 15 Israeli assassination operations.

An official in Gaza Strip government said the man had been detained in the past.

The official, who spoke to Ma'an on the condition of anonymity, warned that Hamas' government was not dropping its guard against "those who mess with the security of our homeland."

"Our members are spread out everywhere" to respond to spying, he added.

The official also confirmed that security services had other suspected collaborators in custody.

There is little tolerance for suspected spies in Palestinian society because Israel relies on them for carrying out military attacks and even assassinations. On Wednesday, an Israeli airstrike killed a senior commander of Hamas' armed wing, sparking days of deadly violence.

In September a Gaza court sentenced a man to death on charges of collaborating with Israel.

The Hamas government has carried out 14 formal executions since taking power in 2007, drawing criticism from Palestinian human rights groups.
