BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The International Press Institute strongly condemned the Israeli military's bombardment of a building that houses local and international news media in Gaza.

"Journalists are never a legitimate target, either for violent attack or restrictions on freedom of movement," IPI deputy director Anthony Mills said.

"We remind Israel and Hamas that journalists covering conflict have a right to do their job without being targeted, regardless of the political affiliation of the media houses they work for," he said.

The IPI statement condemned Israel and Hamas for propaganda efforts, including the Israeli army's takeover of radio frequencies to broadcast messages to the public.

The Vienna-based group also condemned a travel ban that Israeli media claimed had been imposed on foreign journalists by Hamas.
