BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Unknown gunmen opened fire on an Israeli military checkpoint in Jenin on Wednesday, locals and Israel's army said.
Several people hiding behind nearby trees opened fire on Salem checkpoint, locals said, with Israeli soldiers returning fire.
Soldiers then searched nearby villages for the perpetrators, with clashes breaking out with youths in Zubaba. Israeli forces fired tear gas and sound bombs at villagers, with youths throwing stones and empty bottles at soldiers.
Hassanein Abu Hija, 17, was hit by a rubber bullet during the clashes and taken to hospital, witnesses said.
An Israeli army spokeswoman said that "the fire was probably carried out by a vehicle that fled the scene, with several structures in the area damaged. Soldiers searched the area for suspects while Palestinians threw rocks at them."
Israeli forces did not respond with riot dispersal means, she added.
